PCPE v3.0 upgrade to v3.0.0.1

I have recently started using APC in my business of computer installation all over the region. I am getting this complaint for ALL installations.

I hear that version 3.0.0.1 solves this issue. The problem is that I am told that I need to uninstall version 3.0 first. Is this true?

Most of these people only know how to check email. They don't feel comfortable uninstalling software.

Is there an easy way to upgrade to version 3.0.0.1? It is going to take me much time to walk people through the steps on how to uninstall and reinstall. These people are under my warranty for new APC installation. They expect it to work correctly.

FYI - yes, the UAC issue was silly and overlooked at some point but it was fixed several months ago with v3.0.0.1 of PCPE. and yes, that is compatible with Windows 7.

no, i did not install 3.0.1 and used the 3.0.0.1 .exe and it offered the option for upgrade when i launched it. that completed successfully.

You can lower the UAC in windows's control panel or you can go into the program file and find the file it wants you to say yes to and go in to the properties>compatablity>and uncheck Run As Administrator

We've been patient with APC waiting for this embarassing error to be fixed. I installed V3.0.0 and it was NOT compatible with Windows 7. Is V3.0.0.1 compatible?

I'm afraid that the incompatibility of V3.0 is not a code bug, but rather, hiring incompetent programmers who can't pick up a manual and learn about modern, post Windows 3.1 Operating Systems.

I am a senior engineer with over 35 years experience in computers. As any Windows programmer who has picked up a manual in the last 10 years would know:

1) Powerchute would need to run as a Windows Service which would not cause the Admin prompt to pop up, but can't interact with the Windows Desktop, and
2) A user program which should be located in the Notification Area ("system tray") which does NOT require Admin and IT interacts with the APC service

In the Linux world, the term is ROOT, and regular users do NOT logon with ROOT privileges. Microsoft is trying to get people to stop logging on with Adminstrator privileges. APC's Powerchute V3.0.0 is designed by someone who hasn't looked at a Windows manual for the past 10 years. If they took the same approach to driving a car, they'd be looking for their carburetor and wanting to crank start their engine.

Proof: logon; when Powerchute starts and it asks you for Administrator permission, you will require an Administrator USERID and PASSWORD. These should not be available to regular users, otherwise what is the point. My kids can wipe out my computer because they have FULL access which they can then in turn provide to viruses that would like nothing better than to gain access to my computer running under an Admin userid!!!!!! My kids should NOT run as Admin, nor am I planning any time soon to give them the Admin userid/password.

And for the moron who suggested lowering the UAC prompt - stop giving people stupid advice. The reason FOR UAC is to prevent user programs from running using Admin authority. Most regular home users don't understand what lowering the level of UAC means - try speaking plain language - tell them you are recommending "this is a security prompt because we designed our software incorrectly; to fix this, please turn OFF security on your system......and might I suggest as well that you remove that darned Anti Virus Software, and Firewall software, and in order for us to provide the best support, please publish your userid, password and credit card information at www.truthinbs.com".

Yes, it upsets me when someone who knows what UAC is - it prevents programs from running with special privileges that can damange your computer and bypass security - when someone tells a user to turn it off. Call it what it is - be honest instead of being a spin doctor - in order to fix the stupidly designed s/w, APC needs you to turn off your security......

Again - anyone - logon as a regular user (non-Admin) - see what happens. PC will ask you for an Admin password, not just a "can I start" message.

I hope that APC spends more on hiring professional hardware people than hiring little Johnny who's in high school and just learned to write his first VB program.

As a computer professional, I am embarassed. And if V3.0.0.1 DOES fix this architecural mistake, you should do a much better job if letting us professionals know. I'm not going to waste my time install\ing V3.0.0.1 only to find it is the same crap as V3.0.0.0.
