PCNS (2.2.3) doesn't work with solaris

I've got pcns onto Solaris 10 but it is unable to communicate with the management card.

During the installation, i was probe to key in the management card IP , password and authentication Phase then later I was prompt with the error management card is not responding to registration. oddly, the management card has automatically added in the client's IP during this process.

This has resulted the communication between the UPS and server cannot be completed.

I have thought that it might be the SNMP on solaris that is acting but I have disable the SNMPX and SMA. but I still get the same output.

I have done the same on Linux and Solaris Machine. It work just fine but not for solaris.

anyone having the same issue and can rectify it?

does anyone has the 2.2.1 version , I would like to give it a try.

Sorry for the delay as I don't login very often.

PCNS is working fine on the Windows and Linux, it proves that NMC works normally. Did you check /etc/networks on the solairs server to see if the subnet and default gateway settings are correct? Can you use this command to check if multiple install daemon still running on the server?
#ps -ef |grep java"

You mentioned you are using java bundled with PCNS, this should be a Sparc server. Right? If it is x86, you would use PCNS for x86 that should have no java version bundled.

PCNS daemon is java running. They are same among all of supported Unix/Linux.

Hi,

How did you resolve your issue to configure PowerChute Network Shutdown on Solaris 10 x86? I had the same problem. It said 'Management card not responding to registration request.' , The web interface shows the events

If I understand correctly, here are some answers to what you are asking:

"If you are using a firewall, the http port used by the Network Management Card (default:80/TCP), and port 3052 (TCP and UDP) must be open for communication with the NMC. The shutdown command is also sent from the management card on port 80."

It should just be the powerchute network shutdown service that is using 3052.

The Management Card sends UDP packets every 25 seconds on port 3052 to verify connections and status.

[This article also has some more information as to when broadcasts are sent and how often between the management card and Powerchute network shutdown, just click here|http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=786]

Hope this helps!

Hello,

Let me post a couple tips to get you started with this.

-Check your IP settings on your machine. Make sure that you have the correct default gateway as well. I ran across this issue earlier and it turned out to be the default gateway being incorrect.
-You want to make sure the authentication phrase you are using is the same on the PCNS installation as well as the management card. The default adminstrator authentication phrase is 'admin user phrase' with no ""s of course. Make sure you are using the same admin username as the management card as well.
-PCNS uses UDP port 3052 during this registration process. You want to make sure that we dont have anything blocking that. I am not sure to be honest how to check that in Solaris where as in windows you can do netstat -a.

Are you using two network cards on this machine or NAT?

Just some other troubleshooting to try would maybe be stopping and restarting the service or rebooting the management interface.

Furthermore, if you'd like to try 2.2.1, you can get it here: ftp://ftp.apc.com/apc/public/software/unix/solaris10/pcns/221

Hope this helps!

I am on the same subnet as the UPS therefore i don't think default gateway is the problem.

i don't think it's a reachability issue. as if i deliberately use a invalid IP , it prompts a different error of " unable to communicate to management card " and something about secuirty if it is wrong.

Can i know which process is running the 3052 udp as i do believe that this udp error thing is the fault .

i did a trace with my linux ... the communication comes thru when this udp packet is send out.

may i know if the UPS sends a broadcast message for an event ?

Hey,

Is it Sparc or X86? You mentioned that you have done the same on Linux and Solaris Machine. It works just fine but not for solaris. Do you have 2 Solaris servers? One is working fine and another is not , right?

The default install directory is /opt/APC/PowerChute/group1. Can you find if there is install.log file in the install directory? Do you have java version installed on the server? If so, what' version ?

Additionally, can you please reboot the NMC and then install PCNS again?

I am thankful for all your help.

Sorry for being unclear previously.

I had a couple of machine running in a subnet which comprises of solaris , linux and windows.

for the linux and windows , things are working fine.

As for the solaris, i reckon the 3052 udp communication is not getting thru. I am sure that there's no any hardware and software firewall.

i did a netstat -a and i't seems like there's an open socket for 3052 that idles. I am sure that it's the PCNS process that open the 3052 UDP socket as service starts only the registration is sucessful and the registration packet obviously uses port 3052.

i tried using lsof in linux and realiaed it's actually a java program that runs the 3052. am not sure if it's the same for the solaris.

as for the JRE , i am using the one bundle with package.

:)
