No power output smart ups 3000 VA XL

      Hi all,

I have inherited a smart ups 3000 VA XL.  Everything seems OK.. batteries are at 100%. Fans come on.  Pull plug out and the batteries kick in.  Self Test in PowerChute claims to be OK.

However, I cant power anything through the power out sockets on the back.. not even a monitor.  Powerchute shows that the load is always 0.0%

Am I missing a Magic button or switch? Is there a hidden output circuit breaker?

Any ideas / suggestions?

Hi Ajbird,

Couple of last things you could do / try before having it serviced are:

1. With the side/cover off did you check to see that the white molex connectors feeding power from the main UPS circuit board to the rear panel receptacles are all 100 % tight and not coming loose ? (make sure uPS is powered off / unplugged and discharged for safety when poking at them( press power button with ups and battery unplugged or wait a day or two with ups off and battery disconnected ).

I have seen cases where these internal connectors have come lose due to the UPS being banged or jostled during handling or shipping. Can happen within battery modules as well.

2. Do you have one of those plug in three-prong outlet testers ? These have lamps/leds to tell you whether the power coming from the back panel receptacles is "complete", IE no missing grounds, missing neutrals, hot to neutral or ground to neutral mixups.

Good luck!

If a self test happens, it should be running online. This unit probably will have an input breaker near the power plug on it but if the UPS is online, it should be outputting power.

Can you tell us the exact UPS model from the white sticker on the back of the UPS please? Can you give us any screenshots of PowerChute indicating the status of the UPS? it should say online, on battery, output off, etc some place. An event log from PowerChute may be helpful too to better understand the state of the UPS.

ok - great. thank you. This is a big help. The UPS believes it is online and running properly. The rear of your UPS looks like this, correct? http://www.apc.com/products/moreimages.cfm?partnum=SUA3000XLI it seems like the breaker next to the input plug would not be the problem because that is the input breaker. it also appears the actual receptacles have no circuit breakers.

did you try multiple pieces of equipment connected? is it possible to measure the AC voltage with a voltmeter on all of the receptacles? the UPS things its outputting voltage properly so we'll have to confirm that with the items I just asked or suggested.

HI (really appreciate your help)

Yes, that is the back of the UPS

I have tried a very low power NAS / several monitors.  I am sure there is no power leaving the rear of the device.

Is there a fuse or anything I cant see?

I also have a by pass panel.. using the large  -socket output to connect to the panel also seems to indicate that this is also dead (as well as the 8 sockets)

yes, that makes sense. the only thing I would do if it were me is just really verify that the bypass panel is in normal mode vs. test or maintenance but if it was, then you should have power at the bypass panel sockets anyway..i guess unless it was wired wrong.

Can these things be repaired  in the UK?

I am not sure - UK tech support may know better. I only know of the repair facilities in the USA.
