Hi All,
I have a single Smart UPS SRT 5000 UPS with the NMC2 card fitted, connected to a virtualised environment. I have installed PowerChute Network Shutdown for vmware and configured it with our vcenter install.
My question is, by default there are no configured Shutdown Events. I've looked everywhere online and whilst I have found tons of tutorials on how to install on Windows (non virtualised) as well as with the appliance (which we're using), there is nothing about setting up these event rules.
The shutdown settings on the UPS are as default, as is on the PCNS appliance, although I've of course configured the VM hosts in the list.
What I want the whole setup to do is stay on battery until there's about 5 minutes of battery left - at this point it will start to shutdown the VM's. The UPS has several battery expansion packs, so current runtime calibrated is about 2 hours with our fairly high load.
Can someone help please? I just need to ensure the right Shutdown Events are configured as it's not clear what needs to be done.
Thanks!

Hi,
First, I do not recommend starting the shutdown process when the battery life is only 5 minutes. The average time for VMs to power off is 2 minutes, and the average time for PCNS and a host to power off is 3 minutes. Setting the power down at 5 minutes could cause the host not to power off cleanly. Have you tested how long it takes for the VMs to power off, and have you tested to see how long it takes for the host to power off?
Second, in your configuration, are you using vCenter Server, and if so, how many hosts are to be powered off. Do you want the VMs to automatically start up when PCNS and the host/s are back online?
