We are looking at doing a major network upgrade this summer in preparation for a VOIP deployment next summer. That preparation consists of replacing network edge switches in all of our closets. Along with those switch replacements, I want to put in UPS units that I can hook into the network and monitor from a central server. I don't need any shutdown capabilities or real management capability from the units, as I don't know of any switches that can be powered off gracefully. I just want to be able to monitor them in terms of the state of the battery...whether it's still good or not...whether the unit is online...etc.
I have been looking at the SMT750, and it states that it "provides remote management over a network". Does it provide that remote management without an add-in smartslot card, or do you have to buy the network management card for the unit as well? Is the UPS monitoring port on the back that looks like an ethernet RJ45 really just a serial port?
Any info is greatly appreciated!

Thank you for the answer. Out of curiosity, does APC offer any small UPS devices that do have a network interface? It would seem like a popular product for wiring closets. The SMT750 is actually overkill for what I need, since I have no closets with more than one edge switch, but it seemed like the smallest that would provide network manageability.

The [BackUPS HS|http://www.apcc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=3] seems to fit your requirements. It doesn't use the Network Management Card technology, so be sure to flip through the manual to get an idea of the web interface's capabilities.

The SMT750 UPS does not ship with the NMC installed. You will need to purchase the NMC separately if you want to monitor it on the network. The RJ45 which is available at the rear of the unit is for Serial communication.

Hi,
You can install a network management card. Part numbers AP9630 or AP9631. Another option is to install PowerChute Business Edition on the OS (if compatible) and mange the UPS through PowerChute. PowerChute Business Edition is available for down load on apc.com
Note: If you only have 1 UPS you only need to install the PowerChute Agent. You do not need to install the PowerChute Server and Console. You will manage the UPS via the PowerChute Agent web interface.
