Need a agent in the VM
I have a ESX 5.1 host with the PCNS virtual appliance installed. The virtual appliance is connected with the network management card. It is configured to communicate with virtual center. On one of the vm's runs a database, this database needs to be stopped before shutting down the vm. Do I need to install a agent in the vm to run a batch file to stop the database in case of a power failure?

Hi,
You could install a PCNS agent in the VM or use a customized VMware tools script to shut down the database (before shutting down the Guest). Using the shutdown command file won't work because VM shutdown is triggered before the command file is executed in the shutdown sequence.
Or you could configure an Event Driven command file via PCNS to trigger the database shutdown before the main shutdown sequence starts - go to Configure Events page, select Run Command action Here you can add the script to trigger the database shutdown after a delay value in seconds - you'd need to work out how long it takes for the DB to shut down and maybe increase the shutdown delay for the On Battery event to allow enough time for the script to run.
