Ok, as I suspected, you're firmware is sumx v5.0.1. To work with SMT and SMX model Smart UPS, you need v5.0.3 or higher sumx.
So, we'll need to upgrade. The latest version with the blue interface is v5.1.7. Then, we have v6.0.6 on the website which offers many new features (a firewall, multi-user - simultaneous logins, advanced log export capability, SMTP enhancements, etc) and an entirely new interface.
To preview the new interface, we have a Network Management Card 2 @ testdrive.apc.com (AP9630 or AP9631 will be fine) and you can see the interface I am referring to. I only suggest to scope this out first because many people upgrade and hate it and I wouldn't want to put you through it. Once you get used to the new layout, the new features make it worth it though. Some people don't like change.
Let me know what firmware you're interested in.
SFSUMX606 is the part number on the website that you'll find for this newest firmware download. You can go to Software / Firmware, select Firmware Upgrades - UPS Network Management Cards from filter by software/firmware and then you'll find upon downloading, you should review a knowledge base first before upgrading. (Review article ID FA176047 @ FAQ).
Sorry to make this so complicated! I just want you to be well informed before upgrading and being frustrated.
Lastly, once you're ready to update, you can follow these instructions -> How do I upgrade the firmware on an APC Network Management Card? | FAQs | Schneider Electric US

No, its not. It is usually a firmware problem (wrong firmware installed on your management card) or a communication problem.
To start, on your AP9630, please tell me what the firmware version is. Is the interface blue? If so, tell me what you see under Administration->General->About for AOS and Application module names and versions.
If the interface is green, go under About->Network and you'll also see the same screen. I'll need the same info from it.
Let's start there. It might just be an older version that does not support SMTs and we can just simply upgrade it.

Angela,
Many thanks for your detailed reply. I suspected that it might be a firmware issued - I will go straight to firmware v6.06 - since I am new to NMCs it's all change to me anyway!
I will post back when I get the update done to confirm success (hopefully ).

Angela,
The firmware upgrade went fine on the 2nd attempt. On the first attempt the last FTP login failed - I don't know why. However, I now have v6.06 firmware installed and the UPS now appears to be recognised fine. Many thanks for your help.

Hi Anton,
You have loaded Symmetra UPS firmware onto a Smart-UPS model.
You should download part number SFSUMX646. You can go to http://www.apc.com/us/en/tools/download/ and then select Filter by Software/Firmware drop down list and choose Firmware Upgrades - UPS Network Management Card. Then look for SFSUMX646 part number on the page. Download and apply that.
Instructions for upgrading firmware are here if you need them ->http://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA156047

I'm trying to upgrade a Smart-UPS X 2000, SMX2000LV. I have updated the NMC to the following:
SUMX v7.0.4
AOS v7.0.4
bootmon v1.0.9
Based on the Firmware Revision ID number, (ID1003), I tried to update to the file SMX1003UPS_15-0.enc. The initial Current Version was ID1003UPS 07.4. The UPS portion still hasn't come back after updating the firmware via Configuration -> Firmware Updates after an hour. Any idea what I can do to get this unit operational again?
I have two of these identical units at the same location with dual power for all the devices.
Thank you.
