Monitor Multiple Smart-UPS models from single server

I've seen countless post regarding this but I've also seen countless answers as well.

I am looking to monitor 3 separate Smart Series UPSes fro ma single server. How would I go about doing this? Models are SC1000, SC1500, and SC450. All have serial connections. Do I need an expansion card for the server? Do I need a specific edition of PowerChute (even though it's crap)? Is there a better solution then powerchute (APCUPSD?)

Any info is welcomed.

Sorry for the same question asked previously but none of the answers are straight forward.

If I understand this correctly I should be able to use the regular PowerChute Business Edition to monitor 3 separate UPSes centrally if all are connected via Serial.

So i was correct. The windows version of APCUPSD does not support multiple instances but it seems the Linux version does. In theory I could add two USB-SERIAL adapters into the two USB ports on the home automation controller. Install the drivers for the adapters and install APCUPSD. Then install APCUPSD windows version on the 1U Windows Server. I could then monitor all three UPSes via the 1U Windows Server. Two attached to the Linux based controller and one attached to the 1U windows Server.

That make sense?

Hi,

If you install PowerChute Business Edition Agent on each system serially connected to the Smart-UPS you can monitor each Agent by installing the PowerChute Business Edition Server and Console on one of the system. You can then add each of the Agent to be monitored to the Server. The Console is the GUI to view the PowerChute Business Edition Server. Installation instruction are available at this link

There is only one system and 3 Smart series UPSes.

Setup is as follows:

APC SMART SC 450 - Connected to Broadband Cable Modem, WLAN AP, 10 Port Switch

APC SMART SC 1000 - Connected to CCTV DVR and Cameras

APC SMART SC 1500 - Connected to Supermicro 1U Server with 3 Serial ports

I'd like to monitor the 3 UPSes on the 1U Supermicro system; How could this be accomplished?

Hi,

You will need APCUPSD for this configuration. If you review their user's manual you will find Multiple UPS Configuration. Below is a description.

A configuration is where a single computer controls multiple UPSes. In this case, there are several instances of apcupsd on the same computer, each controlling a different UPS. One instance of apcupsd will run in standalone mode, and the other instance will normally run in network mode. This type of configuration may be appropriate for large server farms that use one dedicated machine for monitoring and diagnostics

For support woht APCUPSD you should sign up for their mail list. http://www.apcupsd.org/wordpress/email-lists/

I did think of another option. I do have a small fan-less Linux machine in my rack too. I forgot because it's a home automation controller but it's built on a raspberry-pi and runs Debian. It does have dual USB interfaces as well. I'm thinking of possibly using a USB-Serial on that machine and the on board serial on the 1U supermicro. That would monitor the SC1000 and the SC1500. I could then just ignore the SC450 but I'll first look into APCUPSD. I sort of remember it not being able to run multiple instances on a windows server though. I guess I could have the Linux machine monitor two and have the 1U server monitor the last as an alternative.
