Hi, I have a Matrix 5000 208V with 2 Smartcell battery packs. Over the past month both replacement lights have come on and the Matrix is displaying 2 bad battery packs. I went out and purchased replacement 18Ah batteries, and I have replaced them to the original config. My Matrix is working fine now, but it is still indicating the 2 bad packs, and the lights on the smartcells are still lit.
How can I reset the Smartcells? I dont care to change the date (although that would be helpful too), I just want to get rid of the warnings and warning lights (w/o clipping the wires ๐ )
Thanks!

"Thanks for the help, that seems complicated enough to work. I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks!"
Lol, ok that was pretty funny, I'm going to have to use that!

I have some frustrating news for those that soldered to the chip or shorted it directly.
There is a place ON the board to short that is designed for this procedure.
In the picture posted earlier it is also present there as well, only it's unfortunately hidden under his serial number label.
look closely and at the top center of the board, you will see a place to solder in a push button switch.
It's labelled "SW 1", and its between the data ports.
Short the two smaller solder pads and that's better and safer than shorting in any other location.
No other components are required, just a switch and some solder.
I recommend a right angle PCB switch like this one...

Then, follow the most revised directions above in this thread.

the part number "SMARTCELL" technically does not have user replaceable batteries. there isnt really a reset procedure because you are supposed to replace the entire casing. the only thing you could try is maybe a UPS self test which maybe you have already done that.
the part number "SMARTCELL-XR" (extended run battery pack) does have user replaceable batteries. each XR takes a quantity 1 of RBC14 (which is 4 battery cells). this SMARTCELL-XR does have a reset procedure for the replace battery LED and also a removable/replaceable communication unlike the standard SMARTCELL batteries.
so essentially, since you have a regular SMARTCELL, there is no reset procedure and the entire case would need to be replaced (since there are no user replaceable parts) - thus you'd have to buy a new SMARTCELL which includes batteries. you cannot buy the case separate from the batteries.
sorry, i'm sure thats not what you want to hear ๐

[Here is solution|http://apc-fix.com/page.php?id=98] ( Translation from Russian required )
If that did not help,
Try:
1) Matrix turned ON, SmartCell connected to UPS all connectors ( power & data cables )
2) unplug data cable from SmartCell
3) Wait until led on SmartCell stop shining
4) Short EEPROM IC3 pin8 - 5V to IC2 CPU pin 17 ( it's like you press reset button on SmartCell XR )
5) plug in SmartCell data cable to Matrix main unit
6) led on SmartCell start flashing
7) wait 5 sec.
8) Turn Matrix OFF
9) Remove junction EEPROM IC3 pin8 - 5V to IC2 CPU pin 17
10) Done

This is a pretty ingenious solution, but please keep in mind that if you decide to follow this solution, APC will not support any damage caused in the process nor be liable for any incident or injury that occurs. In any case, that's good input!

I just wanted to add that the instructions worked for me but they were not exactly correct. Maybe I have a newer or older Matrix.
Anyway I wanted to post up exactly what worked for me in case any one comes across this later.
First of all, There was no easy way to get access to the Chip. There was no cover over the chip. I had to take the entire rear section out to get access. While I had it out, I went ahead and soldered wire to each pin of the chip as mentioned above. 17 and 28. I then installed a small panel mount momentary switch in the front of the casing up near the LED up front.
I did this so that I could more easily reset the circuit the next time I replaced the batteries.
As I said, the instructions didn't quite work the same way as detailed in the post above.
Here is what DID work for me for me though.
1) Start with nothing plugged into the Matrix UPS from the battery pack, no Power or Data cables. the Matrix UPS should be up and running as normal.
2) Short circuit pins 17 and 28. I do this with my push button switch I installed.
3) Plug in battery pack Power cable to the Matrix.
4) Plug in the battery pack data cable to the Matrix.
5) The LED will begin to flash.
6) Remove the Jumper between pins 17 and 28 ( or release the button in my case)
7) Unplug Data cable from Matrix
8) Unplug battery pack power cable from matrix.
9) Wait for LED to stop flashing.
10) Plug in the power and data cables from battery pack to the Matrix.

Thanks a lot, Kabak! Your solution works!
We have made some R&D and found that this can be made easier, here it is:
0) unscrew the small metal plate below Data Connectors. You'll get access to the CPU chip
1) Matrix turned ON, SmartCell connected to UPS all connectors ( power & data cables )
2) unplug data cable from SmartCell
3) Wait until led on SmartCell stop shining
4) Short CPU pins 17 and 28
5) plug in SmartCell data cable to Matrix main unit
6) led on SmartCell start flashing
7) Remove junction CPU pin 17-28
8) unplug data cable from SmartCell
9) Unplug the SmartCell's POWER cable
10) Done
