I had a power outage yesterday and had a serious problem with my UPS.
Our power went out around 11:30.
Around noon we heard from the power company and they said they'd be back sometime in the afternoon. I decided it was time to shutdown non-critical servers to extend the runtime. I still had four out of five lights illuminated on the battery level.
One of the servers I shutdown was the machine with a serial cable connected to it.
A short time after I started the shutdown, my entire network was down. I checked the data room and found that my UPS was OFF. No lights. I pushed the power button and everything came back on with 4/5 lights on the battery level.
I later restarted the server with the serial cable and the same thing happened.
Is this supposed to happen? I'm a bit concerned here.

Is the serial cable the 940-0024 cable that was provided with the UPS?
When the machine that is connected with the serial cable shutdown, that would be creating a "dangling cable" situation, which is one of the many reasons a UPS can drop the load or reboot the load. There would need to be software interaction if you're going to have the cable implemented that would do a graceful shutdown. However, in this scenario, since the UPS is also keeping the network up, you may not want to go the route of the serial cable, and may want to look at a Network Management Card.
