Hello all,
I have a Matrix 5000 with a smartcell battery pack. This has been rock solid until now.
I had the UPS in storage for about a year. I took the batteries out and put them on a shelf. The unit literally just sat there. I did take apart chassis. I removed the EU from the other parts.
Today, I put it all back together. I fired it up and it started up with "low battery (load is off)" Okay...I get it. They are dead.
However, there are all kinds of knocks and kicks. It sounds like something is trying to start but isn't. It sounds like it sounds when the system is actually running on batteris. If I move the manual bypass switch I get some beeps and some complaints.
Another curious issue....The main screen is asking me for a password. Some 4 digit password. I did some digging and saw that if I put the system into bypass and then unscrew the EU, screw it back in, it should reset the system so that nothing is required. That did not work.
I really like this UPS because until now, I haven't had a problem with it since it was new in 1999. I wouldn't mind upgrading except I like it and it has always worked.
Any ideas on what is going on or what to try?

BTW, after 10 minutes the UPS itself went into BYPASS mode. It is beeping like crazy now but seems to be running. Beep, beep, beep, babeep repeatedly. It asks me to take it out of standby. When I try, it doesn't do it and remains in bypass.

Hello there,
I have many serial cables. I have A LOT of cables that have come with my other APC UPS systems, Like at 3000 RM-3u, a number of 2200 RM-2U units. Is there a specific pinout?
What I have done so far is just turn it on and off a bunch of times. Each time it starts it says or does something different. Most of the time it beeps and makes a mechanical clicking sound. It works in bypass mose (hard switch). As soon as I click it onto regular mode the front screen dims, clicks a whole lot, an then turns off.
I am trying to figure out if the batteries charge in bypass mode. If they do, I'll stand the beeping while they charge. If they don't, how do I charge these batteries. They were only 2 months old when we put this machine out of service a little over a year ago.
A password wasn't set at all. In fact, as I scroll thru the entire system, it has lost ALL of its data. Name, serial number, manufacture date, etc. It is like frosty the snowman with a new hat. "Happy Birthday!"
TIA
Tom
