Mac OS X Server 10.7 computer doesn't display UPS options in Energy Saver

Mac OS X Server 10.7 computer doesn't display UPS options in Energy Saver

Mac specs: Mac Pro, 2.8ghz quad core intel, 12gb ram, OS X Server 10.7.5
UPS specs: APC Smart-UPS SC1000 2U Rackmount Tower
Purchase date: Jan 2012
USB Cable: APC USB to Serial Smart Signaling Cable Model AP9833

#1 Using the System Information App USB section I can see that the Mac recognizes the cable as a USB-Serial Controller "Prolific Technology"

#2 The energy saver control panel does not display any UPS info and the System Information App Power section does not display any UPS info.

#3 We have tried unplugging the cable.

#4 We have tried installing apcupsd (which we use on our all linux boxes) - but it can not detect the UPS

Suggestions?

did you ever get a driver for that prolific device? i've never used it on a Mac but I know on Windows it requires a driver to be installed. is the Mac indicating it is installed properly or did it just detect it and we might need a driver? i asked someone about this and they seemed to indicate that it is the same case on the Mac - driver needed.

um - no. no success.

tried installing the prolific drivers - and rebooted - no luck.

shutdown the mac and power cycled the UPS - no luck.

I tried this on two different Macs running different OS X versions.

gave up - ordered UPS from another vendor.

I still like APC just not Mac compatible for me.

the AP9833 is only a USB to serial adapter. you will still need the UPS communication cable that came with your UPS.

i believe your SC1000 came with a serial cable, part number 940-0024 or 940-1524, correct? it has a serial connector on both ends.

i think what you should have here is SC1000->940-0024/940-1524 serial cable->DB-9 end of AP9833->AP9833 USB end to your server.

can you try it this way and share results?

we tried this without success

we daisy chained the two cables together but no luck

i rebooted the mac no luck

the mac detects the usb cable but that's all

anything else to try or is it time to move to a new ups?
