Is it possible to create a comm link from a MX5000 to a modern server using a RS232 to USB conversion cable and the PowerChute software? Will that work? Thanks!

Okay, we ended up using the original 940-0024 cable with a Dynex DB9 to USB cable we purchased at Best Buy. We downloaded a driver and installed the latest version of PowerChute and it does see the UPS, but says it (PowerChute) does not support the MX5000. We have not been able to find our original cd that came with the unit. Is there some place we could download the original software that came with the MX5000?

I believe this is possible if you go from the UPS->940-0024 or 940-1524 APC Smart Signaling Cable->RS-232 to USB adapter->Computer (where your serial to USB adapter would show as a COM port). I haven't specifically tested it but I know we offer that option with a few current model UPSs and it does not seem to require anything special beyond what I mentioned. It'd be worth a try but officially, this UPS only supported serial communications.

Someone mentioned to me a RS232 to USB cable
APC USB to Serial Smart Signaling Cable, part number AP9833
Is this cable still available and would it work? Thanks!

Yes, I believe you can purchase that and it'd be as good as any other USB to serial adapter. It requires a driver to be downloaded and installed but we have not tested that cable with the discontinued Matrix UPS either.
