Smart-UPS are compatible with PowerChute Business Edition. Back-UPS are compatible with PowerChute Personal Edition. The only exceptions would be for very old units. Some older Back-UPS that have a serial port for communications instead of a USB port will use PowerChute Plus. There are also some old Smart-UPS that would be compatible with PowerChute Plus. PowerChute Plus was discontinued in 2002 for most OS. There were a few Unix OS that PowerChute Plus remained active shipping for until 2005. PowerChute Plus is no longer supported by APC by Schneider Electric.
There are also a few Back-UPS that do not ship with communication ports and those are not compatible with any PowerChute. An example is the BE350G.
NOTE: Many Back-UPS have a RJ45 data line port that is designed to work with APC cable 940-0127 That cable is USB on one end and RJ45 on the other. The USB side is what is connected to the computer. 
All Smart-UPS since the release of the Smart-UPS SUA model family support both USB and Serial communications with PowerChute Business Edition. The cables are listed in FAQ FA163632
