Installation question with spare battery pack on a SUA3000XL

We currently have an SUA3000XL in the office, running our NAS, a few monitoring computers, and other devices. The boss has decided to splurge and buy 2 Battery packs (XL48V) and wants me to plug them into the main UPS.

We don't run Powerchute on any system attached to the UPS, since we don't actually have any Windows machines nearby. Is it going to be safe to connect the battery packs up to the main UPS, or do I need to have it hooked to a PC first to tell it it's going to have 2 Battery packs attached?

you can physically add/plug in the batteries safely and the UPS will use those batteries. the only thing it wont do is calculate the runtime correctly and also as you kind of mentioned, the powerchute software would need that to shut items down accordingly. it will just work fine in your situation - no need to tell the UPS it has extra battery packs.

Before I go fiddling around: do I need to have the UPS off when I plug them in? And is there an order I should plug then in at all?

eg: I have:

UPS BAT1 BAT2
\---------| \---------|
Do I plug BAT2 into BAT1, then BAT1 into UPS, or BAT1 into UPS, then BAT2 into BAT1?

these are hot swappable so you can go ahead and plug them in hot. just be careful not to hit any other power plugs, etc 😛

You'd plug the Bat 1 into the back of the UPS (which the port for the external battery may have a cover on it right now, I forget with this model off the top of my head - so you may need to remove that), then plug Bat 2 into the back of Bat 1 and you're all set!

it doesnt matter what order you do this - whatever is easier. you could plug Bat 2 into Bat 1 then connect Bat 1 into the UPS or just do it individually.
