Input power error

We have an APC Smart UPS 3000 RM. Every day between 7:20 - 7:30 a.m we get the following error, of course with slight time variations. Typically, the problem lasts about 10 seconds:

Our IT engineer approached me about it. He suspected an external power problem. There were some inductive loads on the same circuit which could possibly have been an issue, so I had 2 new dedicated circuits pulled in from a different panel. We're still having the problem.

The IT engineer next decreased the sensitivity setting to +/- 40V with no effect

The fact that it happens within the same 10 minute window every day leads me to believe the problem is some sort of setting within the UPS. I think if it was a board problem or a bad component etc, the failure would be more frequent and erratic. We're trying to decide whether to try a new board or rent a line monitor. Both will cost a lot of money.

Have any of you seen this before or have any ideas about what the problem could be?

Do you know if the unit is actually (physically) transferring to battery?

We have no way on knowing if it's really transferring. We don't have a manual so we're just shooting in the dark. Can you tell us if there is a test point or some other way of determining if it's really switching over?

No problem with the delay, I really appreciate your help! An external draw causing a sag is the first thing I thought of, which is why I had a new dedicated circuit pulled in from another panel. The original circuit was from a panel that was feeding at least 2 compressors which possibly could have been timed to come on in the morning (although I didn't see any timers). We don't have a line monitor so I don't know if there was a sag, but I dont like servers sharing circuits with inductive loads period, so l made sure the panel we pulled the new circuits from is free of them.

After the server was connected to the new circuit we still had the problem. I would be very surprised if we have an event happening every morning that affects every circuit or panel in the building complex. We're involved in research and have a lot of sensitive equipment. I think an event like that would show up in other equipment as well, but we don't see it. I'm fairly certain that the problem is with the UPS.

IT is going to do a firmware upgrade this evening. We'll see if the problem returns tomorrow morning. I hope that's all it is. I'll post an update as soon as I find out. Thanks again! 🙂

no problem. if its not something on either of the circuits or something causing a power fluctuation, i am stumped. i do remember you indicating in your first post you had played with the circuits and tried to rule that out. oops.

i am not sure how far you are going to go with this but i wasn't sure if you could look into getting an oscilloscope to monitor the line when this happens in the morning. maybe something happens with the frequency too.

The issue with a scope would be knowing when to trigger to capture the unknown event. It might make sense to rent or borrow something like a Dranetz power line analyzer, which is specifically designed to trigger on these events and record them for later use. Depending on the amout of power your company purchases from the electric utility, they may provide one for you. The commercial electricians who service your building wiring might also have one.

Back in the "old days", you could often see banks of capacitors up near the top of a utility pole. These were smaller and rectangular and in groups of more than three, compared to transformers which were usually cylindrical and don't appear in groups of more than three. Lower down on the pole, you might see what looked like an electric meter, but on closer observation it was a clock / timer in a meter housing. The idea was that as the workday started and ended, the power factor would change and the timer would switch the capacitor bank in and out of the circuit to provide correction. This is definitely enough to confuse the input side of a UPS.

Modern distribution systems generally don't use such a brute-force approach. It might be worth seeing what sort of information you can get out of your electric utility. The hardest part will likely be finding someone who understands what you're talking about and can send you to the right person in the distribution department instead of transfering you in circles.
