Thankyou very much for the useful information. I would like to know that without the expander and APC network management card we cannot implement the automated shutdown. We have to have either APC Network Management card or UPS Interface Expander. Is there any way to manage the three servers without these two Network Management Card and UPS Interface Expander. Your help is highly appreciated.

no problem!
by default, without a network management card OR interface expander, you can only gracefully shutdown ONE server via a physical connection (USB or serial) with the included software - powerchute business edition single node.

i dont think we have official documentation on step by step setting this up. are you going to go the interface expander route or NMC route? we have install instructions for each piece.

Dear Sir,
Thank you, we would like to go with Network Management Card is it mandatory to buy the Powerchute Business Edition software for automated shutdown of the servers incase of power shutdown. If we go with NMC could you please tell what are the software requirement.

If you go with the Network Management card, you only need to buy (1) network management card per UPS. The network management card will ship with a CD that includes the free edition of Powerchute Network Shutdown which you will need to install on the [supported operating systems|http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=127]. you can also download it from the website with the link i provided. you do NOT need Powerchute Business Edition if you buy a network management card. they both are essentially two different ways of achieving a graceful shutdown and work independently - its either one or the other.

i think the network management card method is the way to go. it requires a lot less cabling, is easier to configure, and relies on your already existing network connections. you have a lot more functionality just with the network management card in regards to SNMP, email, event and data logging, syslog, RADIUS, optional environmental monitoring, and so much more.
if you'd like to log into a network management card to see what the interface looks like, check out http://testdrive.apc.com

Dear Sir,
We have installed operating system on our machines ** Windows XP Pro SP2**and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1 as per the operating system support matrix the software is compatible with Windws 2003 R2 SP2 Standard/Enterprise edition and Windows XP Professional SP3. I would like to ask you whether the Network Management Card software backward compatible or not. As far as Windows XP Professional machine we can upgrade to SP3 but we have Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1 but not Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 Enterprise for this reason does NMC software has backward compatiblity or any other version of NMC software that support the mentioned Operating System. Please your advise on this issue. Your usual coperation is highly appreciated.
