Help configuring automated server shutdown when 10 minutes of power remain

Hi,

First time poster, long time APC fan!

I have a Smart-UPS 3000VA with a NMC in it, and two Dell servers that are acting as Hyper-V hosts.

Each Dell server has the PCNS agent installed on it. The NMC and two PCNSs all have IP addresses and can talk to each other. I can get on all three management webUI screens.

The UPS, the two servers and the two network switches are all connected to my Smart-UPS 3000VA device.

I want to configure this system so if there is a power-cut, then when there is 12 minutes of run-time left in the UPS it automatically shuts all my VMs down and then shuts the two host servers down and then puts the UPS into a mode whereby when the power comes back on it will start up again.

Can anyone give me an idiots guide on how to do this? There is a lot of configuration options in the NMC and the PNCS webUIs and I want to get this right 🙂

Any help gratefully received. Thank you for your time.

Hi,

What is the exact model Smart-UPS 3000. Depending on the model there are different options available.

The most basic option is to set the low battery threshold on the NMC to 12 minutes. When the UPS falls below 12 minutes of runtime the NMC will send a signal to each PCNS client telling the client to shutdown the OS. The hosts will be responsible for powering down the VMs.

You will also need to know how long it takes for the hosts and VMs to be power down safely to be sure the UPS does not power down prior to the hosts.
