I recommend configuring "Runtime remaining below threshold in PCNS. The setting is under Configure Events
This will start the shutdown when the UPS batteries fall below 12 minutes of runtime.
To configure VM shutdown go to Virtualization Settings and select VM Shutdown and enter the amount of time it takes for the VMs to power down. The default is 2 minutes.
If you what PCNS to start the VMs select VM Startup
When the UPS falls below 12 minutes of runtime the VMs will be commanded down. PCNS will then wait the VM shutdown delay time and then send a power down signal to the Hyper-V host.
You should read PCNS Hyper-V and SCVMM User's Guide and FAQ FA159689 "Configuring Virtual Machines to shut down when a Hyper-V host is commanded to shut down."
I also recommend you configure the Low Battery Duration on the NMC to be 2 minutes greater than the amount of time it takes for the VMs and hosts to power down. As an example if the VMS and hosts take 6 minutes to power down set Low Battery Duration to 8 minutes. This is a fall safe so if the UPS ever falls below 8 minutes of runtime while on battery a shutdown will be triggered. It should never happen since PCNS will start the shutdown at 12 minutes but Low Battery Duration is a fall safe.
