Finding Management IP Address on AP9606

Hi,

We have had a AP9606 card installed on one of our UPS's for a long time now but no one ever set up the IP configuration part of it so its pretty pointless. I would like get this configured so we can receive alerts etc however run into an issue trying to get access to the card to set it up. I have performed a Reset on the AP9606 to remove any previous config that may or may not be there.

I have tried using the ARP method by adding the mac address (Found the MAC using a Cisco Switch) for the AP9606 card and adding a static arp entry on a computer on the same subnet which did not work. There are no communication errors with the computer at all it just cannot ping the AP9606.

I have tried using the Network Configuration Utility from APC download center which didn't pick anything at all (Could be because the card is so old?)

I dont have the serial cable provided with the card or cannot see a serial port on the AP9606 card itself so cannot use that method.

Is there anything else that I can try?

Thank you

How did you "reset" the card? I presume you just pressed or held the reset button on the card itself but that does not reset anything. It just reboots the management interface. Resetting configuration is only done by logging into the card.

What model of UPS is this card installed into? Device IP Configuration Wizard v5.0.2 (what is currently on our website) does not work with AP9606 because yes, it is so old. ARP typically doesn't work if the card already has some TCP/IP settings assigned to it. You can verify this is the case by verifying the condition of the status LED (what color is the LED and is it solid or flashing - the one that has a check mark next to it).

Depending on the UPS type, maybe you have a cable from a different UPS to serial into it? Or a cable can be made/purchased but that is probably going to be what you'd need to do.

HI. Thanks for your reply.

Yes It was just holding the 'Reset' button thinking it will reset but clearly not!

I haven't got the exact model that the device is plugged into, it is at branch office so I can take a look when I am next over there. the status LED is solid Green.

Are the cables hard to make? I would prefer to make a cable and get it sorted!

Thanks

I can't share it here really but once we confirm the UPS type and then what cable it'd be, I can point you in the right direction. You can probably find information online on how to make the cables to be honest. You can't just use any ol cable though - an incorrect cable can turn the UPS off due to the special pinout.

I managed to found out the original set IP configuration by setting up my Switch to monitor the port that the APC was newly connected to. From there I used Wireshark to see what what packets were coming out as and managed to discover the IP address. Changed my Laptop's IP config to match the APC's subnet (Not IP address) and then could access the device.

Changed the IP config to match that of our current network and now have full access.

Thanks for your help Angela
