We have a APC SmartUPS 3000 with the remote management card. Everything was working fine for a day until I started to add some email recipients into the management console. During the middle of the email test on the third contact, it looked like the remote management card stopped responding. I eventually saw a webpage stating that the APC was in the middle of a reboot. After that I got a message saying "Error: The application was not able to load.". I have everything turned off except for HTTP so I connected a laptop with the serial cable to connect to the APC.
After logging in, I can click on the numbers to get into the features. However after getting to that sub-section, it's completely empty. All the typical configuration options are missing and it no longer shows any of the current settings.
So what in the world happened?
How do I fix this problem?
Do I have to power down the UPS which in turn make us shutdown all our servers?
Can the remote card be removed and re-inserted safely while the UPS is still on?

====== UPDATE =======
After speaking with their online chat support, I was forced to load up a new firmware image because the original has become corrupt. After trying this a few times, the interface still failed to come back online. The last thing I was doing on the web interface was to send test emails out. The management card hung and rebooted during one of those tests. After flashing a few times with FTP and the Windows .EXE, they all resulted with a status of P+ N+ A!, I went back in with the hyperterminal console and disabled all the email addresses and logged out. I then executed the remote flashing through the .exe. After this time I got the status of P+ N+ A+ and everything seems to be working fine.

Hello,
Just for troubleshooting purposes, were you using a Windows XP machine either time to complete this? Most of the time we've come across problems with either the executable or a manual FTP flash when using XP due to Microsoft's ingenious idea to firewall pretty much everything, resulting in a possible AOS load failure.

heyhbk,
Just a side note for your problems emailing to external address....
This issue is caused by the option to relay messages not being enabled on the SMTP server. There should be an option within the SMTP server administration to allow relaying, either for the particular user account that the APC device is using to send email, or possibly at a Ievel of the APC devices IP address. Once you find the setting to enable relaying from the APC device to external email addresses, you should be all set.

I'm glad I came across this post because I had the EXACT same issue. I've been having trouble getting email notifications to email addresses outside our network to work at all. I decided to update the firmware first. The udpate was successful so I began testing the email addresses to see if anything had changed. Sure enough within a couple minutes I could no longer access the unit except through telnet. I disabled all the email addresses as suggested above, applied the firmware again, and was able to login fine. Email notifications to outside email addresses still doesn't work, but at least I can log in again, thanks 🙂
