I'm in the process of making the cable I need. I'm interested in calibrating the UPS because it is giving me blinking battery charge lights even w/new batteries and minimal load. So do I have to install the business edition software? The "agent/server/console" format makes me nervous.

If you're simply going to install the software just to change the blinking lights - don't bother.
Call into tech support and request a calibration key be shipped to you. This is more efficient than the software initiated calibration.
If you want to use software but don't want to use PCBE, it's possible you can get away with using PowerChute Plus, which is available here:
