I purchased a Back-UPS Pro 1400. The device itself works fine. On the back, there's an RS-232 port to be able to connect it to my computer. However, my computer does not have an RS-232 input, so I bought a USB-to-RS-232 converter. I now have my APC device plugged into its proprietary RS-232 cable, and the end of that cable plugged into my converter cable, which is then plugged into my computer (which is running Windows 8).
When I go into my Device manager, I see that my computer sees something plugged in as a COM port (it's named USB Serial Port (COM3)). However, when I try to install the PowerChute software, it says that it cannot find a connected battery.
What should I do? I would like my computer to be able to shut down gracefully in the event of a power outage.

Hello, it's a Back-UPS Pro 1400 (it looks like this http://coasttec.com/catalog/images/1072//BP1400front-1.jpg) I'm not sure if there's more information about the model specifications you need.
As for the software, I am attempting to install v3.0.2 for Windows 8, which is the second one on this page - http://www.apc.com/tools/download/software_comp.cfm?sw_sku=SFPCPE302&id=129&swfam=129
I got to that page by Googling "Back-UPS 1400 software", which lead me here - Back-UPS Pro 1400VA - Download Software and Firmware | APC
Please let me know if you need more information, I'd be happy to provide it
