APC SmartUPS RT 5000 Console cable issue

Hello,

I have APC SmartUPS RT 5000 with AP9619 network card. I'm trying to configure the UPS (give it IP and host name etc.) and connect it to network. The problem is there is no console (2,5mm) port on AP9619 network card and plugging to SERIAL COM port on UPS doesn't work (Tried Putty and TeraTerm consoles , its just blank). How can I connect to the UPS via console cable to configure it??? Thank You for help!!

Those are SURTD5000XLT. Again no console port on NMC , SERIAL COM port on UPS but I console seems blank when I connect via my laptop. Im using rj45 ti db9 cable with e119932/LL84201 markings.

I will go ahead and try removing the NMC tomorrow and see if that helps , I really don't think it will as both UPS's are behaving the same way. I guess I will have to purchase the mentioned cable as I do not have it around

P.S. When I remove the NMC , will cause the UPS to shutdown by any chance???

Yes, you need the APC cable unfortunately. I am not sure where this one is from but the APC cables are proprietary.

And yes, the SmartSlot accessories are hot swappable -> How do I properly install/uninstall my SmartSlot accessory card into my UPS? | FAQs | US so you're UPS won't turn off. Connecting a non-APC serial cable to your UPS poses this risk though depending on the pinout of the particular cable.

Yes, you need 940-0625A for 6ft version of 940-1525A for 15 foot version. It looks like the 6ft version we offer as a spare part under 0J-940-0625A.

There is some compatibility differences between the older AP9617/18/19 cards and AP9630/31. But, AP9619 that you have will work with SURTD5000XLT.

So to confirm, you are connecting with the cable you just got, to the RJ-45 port labeled SERIAL on the UPS itself and have your hyperterminal set to 9600/8 data bits/1 stop bit/no flow control. Verify SCROLL LOCK is not on and also verify you have the correct COM port on your computer, especially if using a USB to serial adapter.

If 9600 does not work, you can also try 2400 and the other baud rates here in case someone changed it -> Why can't I connect to my APC Network Management Card or embedded Network Management Card using a se...

The other thing we can do to narrow down the problem is at the 9600 settings, with the NMC removed, you should be able to press enter and get to the "RT CONTROL MENU" which would at least prove the cable/hyperterminal is working as well as the serial port on the UPS. Then, we'd want to try all of the different baud rates I noted above.

Are there actual lights on the AP9619 itself? There are two but if the card is powered, you should see one at a minimum. I am referring to the RJ-45 jack on the AP9619 and the LED next to the checkmark and X. I don't recall us verifying this earlier.

Other thoughts would be to try a different computer just in case. Last thing you could try if everything else has been done would be to turn off and remove the load from the UPS (which I imagine you may need to plan for), turn off the UPS itself, remove AC power to it - maybe by tripping the breaker or something after it is off, and "braindeading" it by holding down the (o) off button for a few seconds until you hear a click and possibly see the LEDs flash on the front of the UPS. This resets the UPS communication in case there is a problem with that.

Hi,

To connect to the Management Card through the serial port:

1. Select a serial port on the local computer, and disable any service that uses that port.

2. Connect the serial cable to the selected port on the computer and to the configuration port at the UPS. Use 940-0024, the 6-ft cable that came with your UPS.

3. Run a terminal program and configure the selected port as follows:

– 2400 bps

– 8 data bits

– no parity

–1 stop bit

– no flow control

4. Press ENTER, repeatedly if necessary, to display the User Name prompt. The default user name is apc and the default password is apc.

I would also validate - is the UPS model SURTD5000XLI or SURT5000XLI (you can verify on the white sticker on the back of the UPS)? SURTD5000XLI has an RJ-45 style SERIAL port and I believe will use 940-0625 or 940-1525 RJ-45 to DB-9 serial cable @ 9600 baud rate.

Those are SURTD5000XLT. Again no console port on NMC , SERIAL COM port on UPS but I console seems blank when I connect via my laptop. Im using rj45 ti db9 cable with e119932/LL84201 markings.
