I wanted to post here for anyone else who comes across this thread. There are two conflicting documents concerning the AP7900 password reset/recovery procedure. [This guide|http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/ASTE-6Z6K56_R0_EN.pdf] (page 13) contains an incomplete set of instructions; [this one|http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/ASTE-6Z6KAM_R0_EN.pdf] contains the correct procedure.
To reset the AP7900 authentication credentials, you have to press (and hold for roughly 2 seconds) the reset button once, and then press it again once the Ethernet LEDs begin alternating quickly between green and amber. If it worked, you can then login with apc:apc.

I presume that you are using the 940-0144 (RJ-12 to DB9) cable to configure the IP Address for the Rack PDU. Please make sure that you are using the following COM port settings while you are establishing hyper terminal. 9600 bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control. Could you please let me know the Status and Link/RX/TX status lights which appear?
You can also use Address resolution protocol (ARP) to configure the rack PDU. The MAC Address of the NMC is needed for this method of configuration. The MAC address is located on the quality assurance slip that shipped with the NMC, and is also located on a white sticker on the NMC itself. From a computer on the same subnet as the unconfigured NMC, follow these instructions: The MAC Address of the inbuilt NMC of the rPDU is normally located on a white bar code sticker at the bottom.
Open up a command prompt and type the following (replacing
arp
**Mac Address format: xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx**
On Mac OS X: sudo
Next, use Ping with a size of 113 bytes to assign the IP address defined by the ARP command.
For the IP address defined in step 1, use one of the following Ping commands:
Windows command format: ping
[To clarify, the -l option is the letter L but must be lowercase when executing the command, as noted above.]
LINUX command format: ping
Mac OS X command format: ping
Now, you can Telnet to the card by typing: telnet
Use "apc" for username and password.
Log out to save changes.
I hope that this helps.
