Greetings folks,
We have 2 units that were recently moved from one building to another and we are now unable to access the management card. They have (had) IP addresses that are still valid but we can't seem to access them. I tried to log in this AM via the serial port with OUR serial cable ( not a good idea, the unit shut down ). I tried a few other things but to no avail. Do I need the "special" serial cable I've seen mentioned in other posts or is there some other magic I can perform to get at them?
Thanks in advance.
Buddy

Hi Buddy,
Yes, for serial communications to the AP9630, you need 940-0299 cable which plugs into the little 2.5mm TRS connector on the AP9630 itself.
Before you do that, there are probably a few things to try. Did you try multiple access methods - you said you tried serial but is the card accessible via Telnet/SSH/FTP, etc? What are the LEDs you see on the management card? There is a status LED (with a checkmark or X next to it) and a network link LED. We'd want to know what you see for each as far as color (green or orange) and pattern (solid, flashing rapidly or slowly) and we can determine what the management card is doing.
Assuming it still has its settings and has a solid green status LED and network link LED looks OK, you could try a crossover connection from a laptop to the management card and see if it works that way ruling out a network port configuration issue or problem. You could also run a packet capture utility on this direct connection if it does not work to see if you can validate what IP address the AP9630s have.
Another option will be to run the APC Device IP Configuration Wizard you can download from http://www.apc.com/tools/download/index.cfm through the direct connection which can search a specific IP range since you seem to know what the IP is or it can search for unconfigured cards if the card became unconfigured.
And depending on the UPS model if it has an LCD, you can validate the IP address via the UPS LCD menu usually.
If we really cannot figure it out or get any network access, then yes, I'd probably look to the serial cable option to get into the AP9630s.

Hi Angela,
Thanks for the quick response. I have one of the units connected directly to one of our core switches but can't seem to access it on the network. I'm going to run some tests this AM (hopefully) on that core switch port to see if that might be the problem. When I look at the port on the card, I see a solid green on the right and blinking amber on the left. On the second unit, I only see solid green but I have not yet plugged the ethernet cable into anything so I'm assuming that's normal.
I'll also take your suggestion to download the wizard to a laptop and connect it directly to the card and see if that helps. I was not able to access the card via ssh or telnet.
Updates as I have them. And thanks again for the assistance.
I'll wait to hear from you re: the status of the card that is connected and what state it might be in.
Buddy

Hi Angela,
The problem was between the keyboard and the card, I hate to admit. I had allocated a bad port on the switch, once corrected, the card jumped online as expected.
Thank you very much for your prompt response and willingness to help, greatly appreciated!
Buddy
