AP9630 NM2 card.. safe to remove with UPS on ?

This was originally posted on APC forums on 3/26/2013

Hi...

OUR UPS is not showing up in the NM2 when you connect to it via the IP Address.  I want to see if I can get any data on the voltages.

Powerchute console via the Serial port is not working due to the fact that the NM is plugged in... Im trying not to to turn off the UPS as im assuming it will loose any stored data.

Is it ok to remove the NM2 card whilst the UPS Is on ? Im hoping that this will make the Serial port work. I forgot to say we have a SmartUPS 3000

Jason.

heres some recent events from the log

Yes, most likely. You'll have the data log (which since the card only has so much storage space, you can configure data log rotation and offload it via FTP to an external server for long term storage) and the event log. You might what to consider changing the default logging interval on the data log in particular since the default is every 10 minutes. Depending on your problem, you might need to have it log more frequently. If you do that though, the faster the data gets overwritten (if you do not pursue data log rotation).

Hello - so do you want to try and get the NMC to work? Or do you want to switch to PowerChute?

Yes, you can remove the NMC2 while the UPS is on. Official documented procedure is to "braindead" and turn the UPS off (which basically means to discharge the capacitors) while removing/installing a SmartSlot accessory but there is very little risk and I never do it. I think the risk vs. downtime is not worth it.

Anyway, if you want help getting the AP9630 working, let me know. something has disrupted communication here between the UPS and the management card. We'd want to verify the firmware version (available under Administration->General->About, make sure the serial or USB cables are disconnected, and you could try powercycling the AP9630. You should typically only be using the AP9630 OR powerchute so I am not sure why you'd rather use PowerChute than the management card because its more full powered than PowerChute.

Hi Jason.

I understand the AP9630 NMC is sort of working but not as intended because it cannot communicate with the UPS. While the NMC is in this state, it will not be able to log events or data. The data you see in the management card is stored on the management card and not the UPS so whether or not you turn the UPS off now to get the card working does not matter unfortunately. So, if you cannot see the data from before this issue even now in the management card logs, you won't be able to see it when we get the NMC to start talking to the UPS.

Hi Angela.

thanks for the reply.

The NMC does work, its just not seeing the UPS at the moment  IT has done in the past.  The NMC is currently repoting "No UPS Found"

We had some sort of power surge on 22/03 at about 13:30 which damaged some not IT related Equipment.  The log on the AP9630 indicates this . Im not sure if there is any useful information I can get from the UPS data that may help us try and put a claim into the Power supplier.  Im not sure if removing thw NMC and connecting the Serial Connection will allow Powerchute to then look at any stored data.

03/22/201313:34:19UPS: No longer on battery power.
03/22/201313:34:18UPS: On battery power in response to an input power problem.

Im sure turning the UPS off and on will make the card see the UPS its actually plugged into. But Im assuming this will mean any stored data I maybe able to get out of the UPS will be lost ?

here is the software data...

Time:10:01:53

Name:bootmon
Version:v1.0.2
Date:Jan 21 2010

I would agree with what you are saying but where would powerchute get its data from if you were not using the NMC ?

it stores it locally as well as it is gathered (which I am talking about event and data log) - . there are a few items stored on the UPS itself that the NMC or PowerChute displays for you. these items include configuration settings such as self test interval, sensitivity, transfer voltages, etc and it can store a few things like last transfer to battery reason, etc but it is not storing the event log and measure voltages over this time period on the UPS EEPROM itself.

Ok so its looks as though I wont be able to get any useful data out of the UPS itself then. For future reference Once I get the Card seeing the UPS proply will it be able to provide any useful data that would assist in a claim to the Electricity Provider ?
