I have a 2200XL Smart UPS in my rack. Power load is 80% (or somewhere around that, 4 of 5 lights on the load meter). We had a bad storm come through last week that caused the power to flicker quite a bit. The bottom cabinet of my Nortel BCM 400 phone system ended up without power. The power switch was still on but I had to remove the power cord and plug it back in. The actual phone line side of the system is surge protected and that seems to have worked because nothing is fried. I know I probably have too many devices on it but does this sound like a symptom of an overloaded battery backup? I don't want to spend the money on an additional battery backup if it's not going to fix that problem.
The other connected devices besides the phone system is 5 servers, mail filter appliance, 48 port gigabit switch, Sonicwall security appliance, fiber switch and network hard drive.
Edit: We do have a whole office generator hooked up with an automatic transfer module but power wasn't out long enough for the generator to kick on. It was just power surges from fairly direct lightning hits. As any business, servers and phone community is an integral part of selling our product. I want to do everything I can to protect my core equipment. The UPS is probably 2 to 3 years old and has never run on battery longer than 15 seconds.

i am not 100% sure how that works to be honest. as long as when you turn everything on connected to the UPS and it does not overload with all of the inrush, i at least don't think this is a UPS overload problem.

did the other devices remain powered besides the phone switch? it sounded like yes but i wasnt sure. if they did, it sounded like something specific to the phone switch like it needed to be reset as you mentioned. i assume you have never had an issue before when the UPS has gone to battery with this phone switch prior to this event?

The other devices remained powered. This is the first time I've had this issue with the phone system. We've had power flickers and stuff where it has kicked over to battery for a split second but the phone system has always remained on. The power supply on the phone system has a switch just like on a computer power supply. If the switch is on, the device should be on. I'm assuming that by unplugging it for 10 seconds allowed the capacitors to discharge. I'm not an electrical guru but they would have gotten stuck open because of a power surge, correct?
