Trio QR450 NTP Server

Hi all,

I'm trying to setup a network with six QR450. To simplify the question, let's consider only 2.

I want both radios to act as NTP server and client. So, I have enabled both options. The first radio is connected to my laptop (via Ethernet) which is running an NTP server. It successfully syncs time as a client.

For the second radio, I want it to sync its time with the first radio. They are talking over radio not Ethernet.  So, I enter the WAN IP address of the first radio as the NTP server. However, it doesn't sync as a client.

Am I missing anything? I couldn't find any other config.

I suspect that the NTP Server won't respond to NTP requests on its Radio (WAN) interface as default, since that would generally be a bit insecure.

You should use the LAN IP address, or (NOT RECOMMENDED) change the firewall rules to allow for NTP Server traffic on the Radio interface.

Thanks for the answer and your time Bevan.

For these two radios, it's not possible to use the LAN IP. I had already allowed Radio in the firewall for NTP. But, still not working.

Have you confirmed that the NTP Client can indeed communicate with the NTP Server on the WAN port?

i.e. via PING or similar from the NTP Client device

You'll probably need to provide your testbench configuration screenshots, showing both the NTP client and the NTP server's NTP (and IP) configurations.

A couple of related comments:

1) Typically only ONE radio on the wireless network will be configured as NTP Server. You stated that BOTH of your radios are configured as BOTH Server and Client. I see no need for that.

2) If there is a reliable and secure connection to an external NTP server, then typically ONE radio (usually the master site radio, connected to the gateway) will be configured as both an NTP Client (to get time from the external server) and as an NTP Server, to provide the time to other radios on the system. In this case, all other radios on the network will be configured with the entry point radio's IP address as their NTP server.

3) If there is no secure (cyber-protected) network connection to an external NTP Server, the Entry Point radio (configured as the NTP Server) may be manually configured on occasion with the correct time and date. All other radios on the network (configured as Clients) will then sync to it.

P.S. Remember that the ONLY use for time/date in a Trio radio is to provide time stamping in the Alarm and Event Log.
