I could be wrong but I believe current is not a vector and therefore only measures in magnitude in our power meters. The -kW implies a reverse current in most cases.
This is the same reason you don't get kVA values in the negative even when reverse power conditions. Voltage and Current magnitudes are always positive. You need the kW which is a vector calculation using a 4 quadrant formula. So stick with reverse kW in this case.
