In the vast majority of cases there will be a modbus register that indicates the device type. Typically this is called "Device Type" or something similar in the protocol document.
If you have PME then this will be the first register in the Factory module in the modbus device driver (search in the pmXXX.xml file for "Device Type" and you should be able to find the modbus address to query).
