PM5561 as a Modbus Gateway

Hi,

I have a site here in the Uk where we have two PM5561 meters being used as gateways, when we go to set up the meter we should, according to the manual, see a setting to select between 'Slave' or 'Gateway'

I have even tried through IOn Setup, this setting again does not appear.

Does anyone have any idea as to why this is happening.

Thanks

Andy

When I went into the menu of a 5560, down to the serial port, it stated just Slave, however when I pressed the + or - keys at the bottom it toggled between Slave and Gateway, not sure if it will help you, but it is what I did to see both options.

To control the gateway functionality for a PM556x device using ION Setup, go to the "Advanced Serial Settings" and modify the "Modbus Mode".  The two available options are: Slave Mode (allows access to the device itself only) or Master Mode (permits access to all devices on the RS-485 serial port via TCP).

Note that when the mode is set to Master Mode, you can no longer communicate to the device itself directly via the RS-485 port until the setting is set back to Slave Mode.

Hi Andrew - how old are those PM5561 MID meter?
It is possible that meter has firmware that is dated before 2015 (when the gateway functionality was first introduced to the PM5500 series meters).
Unfortunately, for MID compliance, the firmware upgrade functionality is permanently disabled on the PM5561 model.  Only the PM5560 or PM5563 (no display) models support firmware upgrades.

Hi,

The firmware version is 10.010, I am not sure how old the meter is, the serial number of the meter is 608003514.

I do not see an Advanced serial settings anywhere.

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andrew,

Hmm… not sure how they versioned the MID PM5561 firmware. For the PM5560/PM5563 the old firmware version was labeled V1.00.0004 (released in 2014).

Is there a Manufactured Date screen you can check?

Based on what you described, it is looking like your meter has old firmware (sorry, I do not have a PM5561 with me to check against). Unfortunately, there is no way to upgrade the PM5561 (it is one of the MID requirements). Only the PM5560 and PM5563 models support firmware upgrades.

Best regards,

Make sure you have the latest version of ION Setup, select Help -> Check for Update from the ION Setup available menu options or if you have an older version use the link below:

https://schneider-electric.box.com/IONSetupLatest

Next, make sure the Device Type selected is a "PowerLogic PM5000 Series Power Meter" and then confirm that on the Display tab, that the "PM5561" option is highlighted.

When you view the Device Setup, you should then see a folder "RS-485 Comm Setup" and once you've selected that, you should see two available options, the first being "Advanced Serial Settings".

Hi Robert,

Thank you for the reply

I am using ION Setup Version 3.0.13144.01 as the server is still Windows server 2008R2.

The PM5561 does not appear in the list of options, only the 5560 option appears.

I think that the reply from Cesar previously may be the cause of my issue.

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy, I am including Drew Latimer here.  He is the acting Offer manager for the PM5500 series (until the position is filled).  He will be able to provide answers / more context here.

Thanks Drew!

Since you are using an almost 10 year old OS and the newer version won't run on that version anymore, the best I can suggest is to attempt to copy the PM5561 folder from a newer version of ION Setup into the older version.  Some of the simpler setup screens should still function so try the following:

1.  Copy the PM5561 folder onto something like a memory stick from the C:\Program Files (x86)\Schneider Electric\ION Setup\Tables\PM5000 folder.

2.  Go to the 2008R2 server and paste that folder back into the exact same folder.

3.  Run ION Setup and open up the device properties for the PM5561, go to the Display tab and click on the PM5561 option which should now appear.

4.  While this will likely allow you to setup the gateway functionality now, there might be some setups that will not function (this would likely require the new EXE to function).  Everything still might work though, I haven't looked into that.

Hi Robert,

I have moved the folder from a new version, and the PM5561 option appeared.

I can now select the advanced serial settings, however when i try to send the change to the meter i get an error

Any further help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

That likely indicates that the PM5561 firmware is too old and doesn't have the gateway feature yet and since they might be MID meters, I don't think you can field upgrade them to a version which does support that feature.
