Looking for a meter compatible with Profibus

Hi everyone,

I have a customer who has several ION7300 on a Profibus network and one is damaged and needs to be replaced.

Does anyone know if the PM8000 or any other meter is compatible with the Profibus protocol?  Or else, if there is any gateway available in the market that is capable to convert from Profibus to Modbus?

Hi Arturo,

As I know, just ION7300 series support Profbus protocol, new generation PM8000 just support Modbus, ION, DNP3, and IEC 61850

A recommendation for you is using Modbus RTU-Profibus DP Gateway: LUFP7- a product of SE

Here is a example for configuration PM710 with LUFP7

Hi Arturo,

To work with LUFP7 for communicating had been introduced by us, about 10 years ago. The problem with this solution is, that this will be a "closed" system as you don't have any chance accessing the device then over Modbus. But about 1 year ago I found another solution:

We are using now a gateway which is called X-Gateway from the company HMS. It's the same company that also develops the LUFP7 (which is a labeled product). The advantage of X-Gateway is connected to Profibus DP over serial Sub-D9 connector as usual an one side. On the other side it is connected to Ethernet with Modbus-TCP. The advantages are as follows:

1. You can connect to different devices over Ethernet (e.g. EGX100/300 with connected devices, IFEs or devices with direct Ethernet connection like PM8000...)

2. The system is open for us, as we are communicating over Ethernet and not serial

3. The device can be configured over Web-Browser (no need for configuration software like LUFP7)

4. X-Gateway is also available with other protocols like e.g. Ethernet/IP

But be careful, as both solutions have some restrictions:

On one LUFP7 you can connect maximum devices and the total amount of registers that can be read from all of the connected devices is 122 (=> with 8 connected devices this makes around 15 registers per device). On the X-Gateway you have a maximum number of transactions of 64 (a transaction is a Modbus request) and the maximum number of registers is limited to 128.
