There is often many different ways to do things and different methods have different benefits and drawbacks. Custom reports can do amazing things in PME however it requires deep understanding of the reporting system.
Calculations on the meter likely would be able to use more default reports however would require more custom framework. Myself I would likely use the PM8000 meter, link a maximum module to the kW you want to record, demand verses instant. Then have the output of the maximum module link to data recorder. Have the data recorder linked to clock modules new day pulse. Use a feedback module to have the data recorder's record complete pulse link to maximum module reset. This would give you the value of the maximum recorded at the end of each day.
