ASP stop updating the values of a Modbus Power Meter upon online

An ASP is connected to a digital power meter of a standby Generator Board via Modbus RTU to get the meter readings basically Voltage, Current, Frequency, Kilowatt, etc. when the generator runs.

As such, the digital power meter is offline most of the time since the generator is not running.

However, when the digital power meter comes online upon the generator starts, the digital power meter reading at the ASP is not updated and different from the meter display.

Basically there is 4 power meter in the loop which also connected to the respective standby generator board and all is having the same symptoms.

The only way to update the value is to manually click each value at the ASP to update it.

Is there a way for me to resolve this without doing the manual clicking?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Note: The power meter model is Carlo Gavazzi WM30-96

Hello @Azmi76 ,

Many software will preserve bandwidth and not try to talk to a device the software thinks is offline. Many of these softwares will have an check in period, after the period expires, the software will try talking to the device again. Perhaps this software has something like that as well.

Another test could be to check the traffic to/from software and power meter. Is software sending requests and devices not responding or is software not sending requests. If software is not sending requests, power meters will not respond.

Regards,

Charles

Hi

Which Schneider Electric product are you asking about here?  I see the power meter you are asking about isn't a Schneider one - is this a PME question perhaps?

Thanks

Tom

Hi Tom,

Thank you for the reply.

No it is not a PME issue as we are using Schneider EBO Workstation at site. (No PME installed at site)

I have attached an illustration to give you a clearer picture of what is happening at site.

As you can see, the power meter is normally off (powered down) in normal condition.

It only turns online or power up when the generator run in the event of a power failure.

The issue I have at site is that when the power meter comes online, the ASP is still not in communication (Modbus/RTU) with the meter.  As such the value display at the workstation is not updated.

You need to refresh each value manually at the ASP in order to kick start the communication back on line.

This is not a problem if the power meter is always online.

The issue only happens when the meter is off for a period of time and it seems the ASP stop the communication during that period. (Just for your info, it happens to other third party brand meters as well)

Is there a workaround for this problem so that the communication (Modbus/RTU) can come back online automatically when the meter is power up after a period of time?

Appreciate your help on this.

Thanks.

Regards,

Azmi

Hi Azmi - this sounds like an EBO question then - have your tried that forum?  This forum is for our Schneider metering products.  I would tend to look at what the software is doing here - it may be marking the device offline perhaps.  I don't know EBO well enough to suggest anything there, but perhaps this forum: https://community.se.com/t5/EcoStruxure-Building-Operation/bd-p/ecostruxure-building-forum
