Security Notes
Note 2 - December 2023 Updates - AVEVA Operations Control Logger
Recent cybersecurity updates to the AVEVA Operations Control Logger have been made, and you are recommended to update this software module if your system uses it. This will be the case if you are deploying the interface to the Wonderware Historian or the Wonderware Alarm Provider. This AVEVA component has been updated to address cybersecurity vulnerabilities CVE-2023-33873 and CVE-2023-34982. If either of these interfaces are used, please check the box to update the AVEVA Operations Control Logger.
Note 1 - December 2023 Updates - Chrome Embedded Framework
The ViewX client embeds this module for the display of Geo SCADA maps, help pages and other web pages directed by customer configuration.
Geo SCADA Updates for December 2023 include updates to Chrome Embedded Framework addressing CVE-2023-4863.
When using email redirection or emailing reports there may be issues with Crystal Report exports. Typically you may see a message such as "Export report request failed - Failed to export report, Could not load file or assembly 'System.Runtime.CompilerServices.Unsafe, Version=4.0.4.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. ... (03/21/2023 13:28:35)".
The issue is due to incompatible .Net component versions. It will be resolved in the June 2024 updates, but see the attached zip below DriverCrystalReports.exe.config which contains a file C:\Program Files\Schneider Electric\ClearSCADA\DriverCrystalReports.exe.config which will resolve the issue for prior builds.
From Geo SCADA 2023 and for the 2022 and 2021 December 2023 releases there are lists of third-party licenses. See this page for a list of those components and their license details.
Embedded Component Licenses
In future versions this file is included in the Geo SCADA ISO.
Changed from from Windows 8.1 / Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows 10 (version 1607) / / Windows Server 2016. Installation on older versions of Windows is blocked.
This is because the embedded web browser in ViewX has been upgraded and no longer supports these older operating systems.
If performing the above upgrade you may need to perform a repair install of the March 2023 or May 2023 Updates. The symptom is that the server may not run, or go to the Main state if it was Standby. The cause is variations to the installed version of NLOG.dll. The issue may present itself if the Server is configured with email alarm redirection.
The January 2023 release of Geo SCADA 2022 had Nlog.dll file version 4.7.15.867, but the March and May 2023 releases incorrectly downgraded this to file version 4.7.10.13013. This applies to the x64 version, the x86 version is 4.7.15.867 in all three versions. The upcoming July 2023 release will update this assembly to file version 5.2.0.183 (both x86 and x64).
The GSE upgrade will attempt to downgrade the "NLog.dll" assembly, but Windows installer doesn't support this and ends up uninstalling the assembly. The repair restored this missing assembly.
Affects March 2023 Updates of Geo SCADA 2022. We have made changes to the way in which Geo SCADA ViewX handles memory use by display objects. The objective is to reduce memory footprint. This may affect screen update times adversely in some extreme or particular cases, but for most situations there is no noticeable effect. Noted areas where performance could be impacted are (a) where local scripts make rapid change to mimic item display properties, or (b) displaying lists or embedded lists where the row content changes with database interest, and there are rapid changes. We welcome feedback on these issues through our support team and will continue to improve ViewX performance and memory use in future updates. In the May 2023 updates we have improved the performance of ViewX performance for list updates (where there are rapid changes to list data, particularly to rows of a data set not visible).
Affects December 2022 Updates/Release of Geo SCADA 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Animations using the EXISTS() function will invariably return True when using the EXISTS() function to evaluate mimic parameters or indirect animations.
Issue will be resolved in Geo SCADA 2020, 2021, 2022 updates in March 2023.
Affects Geo SCADA 2021 Clients for versions from March 2022 up to and including May 2022.
All versions of Geo SCADA 2021 (84) from March 2022 monthly update up to and including the May 2022 update - ViewX will not communicate with 2019 or previous Geo SCADA releases. Please upgrade clients to the June 2022 release of Geo SCADA 2021.
Affects Geo SCADA 2020 for July 2021 Monthly release only.
The client/server protocol for ViewX specifies the server's web port. From this version it also specifies that the web certificate of the Geo SCADA web services is checked against the clients local certificate store. (Port defaults to 443).
In the July release this check is enabled by default, and can not be disabled, leading to users having to approve each script execution if the server certificate is not present in the clients certificate store. This is also the case when connecting to older servers.
We recommend that the Geo SCADA 2020 for July 2021 Monthly release is not used for this reason, and it has been removed from the available download list.
Affects Geo SCADA 2020 and 2019 for April 2021 Monthly release only.
ViewX can stop if an Event List is opened with a filter (for example from the alarm list or within the explorer tree), and then the 'Add Filter...' (on column headings) and 'Quick Filter' (in list) are selected before the Edit Filter menu is chosen. If the Edit Filter menu is chosen first then the fault does not occur.
Affects ClearSCADA and Geo SCADA 2017 R3, 2019 and 2020 from June to September 2020. Alarm Disable mode will always be independent, regardless of the server configuration setting.
The March 2020 release of Geo SCADA Expert 2019 is affected.
This release supports a revised version of Virtual ViewX.
It is important the customer uninstalls Virtual ViewX from the server first.
i.e. uninstall these items:
Schneider Electric EcoStruxure Geo SCADA Virtual ViewX Manager
And:
Schneider Electric EcoStruxure Geo SCADA Virtual ViewX Server
Without uninstall the Virtual ViewX update may not be possible, or will re-attempt installation on running the Manager application, and will require you to re-insert the ISO image again.
The licensing will stay in place during removal and reinstallation.
The February 2020 releases of ClearSCADA 2017, R2 and R3 are affected.
We are aware of an issue with mimic parameters. Under some circumstances modifications to mimic parameters are not saved correctly. Consequently this build has been withdrawn.
The Initial and January releases of Geo SCADA Expert 2019 are affected.
Under some circumstances it is possible when multiple Virtual ViewX sessions are used for the traffic to cross session. We recommend all users of Virtual ViewX to use a later release of Geo SCADA 2019.
The January 2020 releases of ClearSCADA 2017 R3 and Geo SCADA Expert 2019 are affected.
When a PC with ViewX is started, it starts and stops a background instance of ViewX for a few seconds in order to preload DLLs. Without this step, the very first run of ViewX on the PC will take some extra seconds to start.
The fault causes a failure of startup program, which will add an entry into the Windows Application Event Log to indicate this. As ViewX is still loaded, the preload to speed up ViewX still works. However, in some circumstances (which include access to a PC with Remote Desktop), a failure dialog box is shown which needs to be acknowledged. There is no impact on ViewX when running.
The registry key and value which run this instance is:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]ViewX Accelerator="C:\Program Files (x86)\Schneider Electric\ClearSCADA\SE.Scada.ViewX.exe" /preload
Simply removing or clearing the value of this key will prevent the error from occurring.
This behavior will be corrected in the next monthly release, and re-installation of ViewX will restore the registry key if it has been altered or removed.
The November 2019 releases of ClearSCADA 2017, ClearSCADA 2017 R2 and ClearSCADA 2017 R3 are affected.
The object property 'ParentGroupName' will return a blank string when used from mimics, Logic or the OPC server.
A potential workaround may be to use "..FullName" as an expression instead of ".ParentGroupName"
