Why no SNMP v2c support in DCE?

From what I can tell, SNMP v2c isn't support in DCE.

Given v2c the most popular of the 3 main stream SNMP versions - it's exclusion is strange.

Yes I understand it's not as secure as v3 - but at the end of the day hundreds of vendors use v2c.

Hi Julian,

That is correct, 2c is not currently supported in DCE. As for the title question of why, it is a product management / engineering decision. There is a current enhancement request in the system however it looks like this will not be something they plan to add. I am assuming it is due to the lack of requests for this option (I have seen very few).

I have added this post to that enhancement request so that if it is revisited, it will show that you and potentially others are looking for this option.

Thanks,

Steve.

julian.maxwell and Steven Marchetti - while we don't explicitly support v2c or have a separate configuration item for it, DCE's SNMPv1 support and configuration would likely support monitoring or discovery of most v2c devices. I say this because of some documentation we have for other APC products: "SNMPv1 is the initial implementation of the SNMP protocol. SNMPv2c then introduced new message formats and protocol operations that are incompatible with SNMPv1. Though, in order to use SNMPv2c, the Network Management Cards will utilize the SNMPv1 community strings and access control settings." To elaborate with what our other NMC product documentation says: "APC Network Management Cards support SNMPv2c enhancements except the InformRequest protocol operation. The other major addition in SNMPv2c (besides some format changes), was the GetBulk operation. The Network Management Cards do support that functionality with both SNMPv1 and SNMPv3. " Based on this and without researching DCE further, I believe majority of the SNMPv2c functionality is likely supported by DCE v1 configuration and options for discovery, monitoring, etc. Hope this helps.
