VM tools on DCE not installed

I have an eval version DCE 7.2.4 installed on Vmware ESXi 5.5.0, 2143827. And VMtools shows as not running (Not Installed). I would like to get VMtools running, 3rd party or otherwise. How can I do that?

Hi Joe,

When you deploy the OVA template, VMware tools is complied with it. It should show "Running - 3rd Party/Independent" when the VM is turned on. It does show however, when the DCE VM is turned off "Not running -not installed" under the Summary section. (I have seen this before in my testing). I'm presuming, you have turned on the DCE VM, and it still is showing that it is not installed? Please confirm?

I have also seen this happen on a customer site. When the DCE VM was changed to another VM network, VMware tools installed with the OVA. Have you tried to deploy the VM using a different VM network? Does the same issue occur? Have you tried to deploy it on another host? Is this possible to test?

Are there any other VM's on the same VM network under the same host experiencing this issue? I know that with regular VM's you can just got to Guest --> Install/Upgrade VMware Tools, but this is not possible on the DCE VM.

Is the DCE VM on the same subnet as the ESXi host?

Unfortunately we don't give out the root password to be able to install VMware Tools through SSH.

Can you capture the full logs of the system (in a web browser type in

Regards,

Breda

No other VMs are having this issue. This was deployed on 1 virtual network, then I did switch it to another after the deploy. I have done this with other OVA templates in the past and never had this issue. Here is the logs from the VM https://www.dropbox.com/s/r4y3kxt417omyye/ls-netbotz-isx.is-svr.luc.edu_2014-11-12_10-07-40.tar.gz?d... Joe

On a headless, linux OS with only a CLI and locked down backend, what benefits are you really getting by installing VMware Tools?  Per this VMware kbase, http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=340

VMware tool addresses these issues

  • Low video resolution
  • Inadequate color depth
  • Incorrect display of network speed
  • Restricted movement of the mouse
  • Inability to copy and paste and drag-and-drop files
  • Missing sound
  • Provides the ability to take quiesced snapshots of the guest OS
  • Synchronizes the time in the guest operating system with the time on the host
  • Provides support for guest-bound calls created with the VMware VIX API

While there may be 1 or 2 things on that list that might be useful, many of them are not.  Feel free to pursue this if you want, but unless I'm missing something, I personally don't see much added benefit.

Found the issue.  VMtools does not load on hosts at version 5.5.0, 2143827. I migrated the VM to our 1 last host at version 5.5.0, 1881737 and vmtools loaded.
