My DCE VM is running slow, it lags every few seconds. So I would like to install VMTools (or TOP) on the server. How do I do that? I can't seem to get to the root console.
Please advise,
J

Hi John,
The recommended spec for 2500 devices is 2 CPU(s) and at least 2GB of RAM as detailed on the spec sheet below:

Hi John,
Unfortunately we don't give out the root password to be able to log into the backend of the server. When you deploy the OVA, VMWare tools is also deployed along with it. In the Summary --> General section (vSphere client) it should say "VMWare Tools - (Running 3rd party/Independent)". What does it show on your vSphere client? Does it show its running? When you capture the full logs of the system (in a web browser type in
What ESXi version do you have?
When did you notice that he VM is running slow? Was it after an upgrade? Was there any network configuration changes recently?
Can you elaborate on what you mean by its running slow? What changes have you noticed? Is it at certain times of the day you notice this lag or is it all the time? Is there backups running at the time the system is slow? Is it the DCE client running slow? If so, what OS is the client installed on? Have you tried a different OS/laptop to connect to the DCE?
What else is running under the host the DCE VM is sitting on?
What is the spec of the DCE VM? Is there enough RAM etc?
Are you using local storage or using a remote repository?
How many devices are you currently monitoring?
What is your polling frequency set to? (global scan level? If you increase this, does this help the lag? Have you tried this? The lag could be caused by heavy traffic on the network also etc.

VMtools seem to be running. It has always run slow but even slower when creating new folders for devices and during device scans. It seems to take forever and lag. We are using a remote repository and monitoring 2000+devices. However it lagged when running 500 devices.
ESXi Version: 4.1.0 Build 260247
The OVF File loaded 1 cpu and 1gb RAM.
Polling devices and other scan intervals are the same as the appliance version I have. So I know it is not network or storage devices. I believe it is the CPU and RAM allocations. I can increase them, but what is the recommended specs for scanning ~2500 devices.

We have suddenly been having issues where the client software (DCE) ejects users logged on & in extreme cases reboots the DCE server. Seems to happen at the same time that disk consolidation is occuring. I have been asked by our VM support to advise what VM Tools are loaded on our installation. When I look at our summary page, it reads, VMWare Tools: Running (Guest managed). I'm not really sure what that means or how I can confirm what VM Ware Tools are running?

John, Did that solve your issue? We had a similar issue and it was actually the DCO connection that was causing it. dave
