Assuming you start upgrading then transfer over to a virtual server or even purchase newer hardware, the number of updates required from 6.3 to 8.3 would take quite a long time and the chance that something will go amiss in one of the updates increases exponentially with all of these updates.
I would strongly recommend that your customer simply deploy 8.3 and manually recreate the system. You can export the device discoveries. I know that's been an option for some time but I don't have a 6.x version to verify it was an option back then.
Please note that 6.x is totally unsupported and should you attempt the updates to 7.8.1 and have issues (your hardware server will likely not allow a higher version), tech support may not be able to help and will likely recommend a fresh start at 8.3 as well.
Thanks,
Steve
