SXW DCE -Polling a Server or Storage

I have always wondered can our DCE software query a server/storage which is running an SNMP protocol support and has a SNMP register map available. Recently we got to test the same with a third party server. The server is a Rack Mount Enterprise class machine from SONY running an NVR application on top of it.

We pushed SONY people in giving us some idea about how their application works and what all information is logged over their server. We got a list of registers which stored complete information pertaining to:

a. Running OS

b. RAM modules installed on server

c. RAID Controllers

d. HDD installed or failure

e. Firmware version of RAID controllers

and similarly around 12 more points of the inherent hardware.

We created a customized DDF for DCE to poll it and worked like a breeze. This is giving me two ideas:

  1. We should open up more into IT monitoring using the same.
  2. We should also open to Storage device monitoring as well , as here also I was able to pull storage device details easily.
  3. Core Networking devices from Cisco, Juniper etc.
I'm working on more customization on this and testing more will share results soon...

I'm working on some set of Cisco devices from which we can pull certain details using their MIB file available through their website: http://www.cisco.com/public/sw-center/netmgmt/cmtk/mibs.shtml

I will keep all updated on what all information is made available. My idea is like this:

a. Poll real time information from these Networking devices and place them into custom fields inside DCE.

b. Once information is inside DCE push it to DCO custom field by device mapping.

This will save a huge amount of work that we have to do while entering data for these devices inside DCO.

Looking towards comments and suggestions or some breakthroughs by other s in similar pattern...

Hi Vineet, DCE can poll anything SNMP with a MIB or Modbus with a register map. I believe the design of DCE is more towards infrastructure of the data center so I'm not sure how much the current DCE offering is geared towards servers. DCO however has IT Optimize which is specifically geared towards servers. It is also my understanding (but don't quote me on this) that future revisions of DCE 8+ may actually incorporate IT Optimize rather than having it in Operations. Makes sense since DCE is the system polling devices for data.

I agree Steve, but I believe it is time we start integrating the other components as well to DCE and make DCE the common engine for all.

Hi Vineet, It's not for me to say what is to be done with the systems and integrations, I'm only giving you the info that I am aware of. Product management can do the rest. Steve
