Can we use SNMP monitoring in order to monitor the PowerChute Network Edition Virtual Appliance?
I have issues where a small computer room was down due to power outage and once the power was back on someone turned on the ESX server but didn't started the PowerChute Virtual Appliance. I had another power outage 30 minutes after that and we couldn't get a clean shutdown. It would be nice if we could monitor the virtual appliance the same way we do the UPS on DCE

Hi Daniel,
No, PowerChute Network Shutdown does not integrate with the SNMP service of the VM host or virtual operating systems. There is currently no option to monitor PCNS using StruxureWare DCE.

Thank you Steve for your fast answer, Would you think this is something the developers would be able to offer for future versions together with a DDF file?
Best Regards

Hi Daniel, No, the DDF file simply outlines the SNMP OIDs and Modbus Registers that DCE should be polling. Since PCNS does not have Modbus or SNMP capabilities, it would not be able to poll it. What is needed is either to add one of those protocols to PCNS or to add some type of PCNS based protocol to the DCE server. I know this is something that is being looked into but since the UPS/NMC itself can be polled and PCNS is doing it's job based on the NMC, they felt is wasn't as important to get this integration working. I know they're still looking into it and in future revisions such as 8.x they may end up having at least a configuration option, it will take a lot of coding to get something like this working, not just a DDF. Thanks, Steve
