Hi Ed,
I'm not an expert and not sure if it will work. But this is what I learnt when looking into it.
As I understand it depends on what type of encoding (DER or PEM) is being used in the .crt certificate.
It might be the .crt is actually already created using PEM encoding and therefore only the extension needs to be changed.
OpenSSL provides a library that can be used for identification of encoding and conversion.
