EcoStruxure IT Gateway 1.4.0.68 Error during install

Hello,

I try to install EcoStruxure IT Gateway 1.4.0.68 on a Dell PowerEdge R410 whi has Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit) running with 64 Meg of Ram.

I run under user "phe" with admin rights.

I started the launch  with "run as adminstrator".

At the end of the install process (after the unzip/unpacking and at the end of the "real" installing) it returns following error :

There has been an error.

Unknown error while running C:\Program Files\ExoStruxureITGateway\1.4 /scripts/install.bat "C:\Program Files\ExoStruxureITGateway\1.4.0" C:\Programdata" "C:\Users\Phe\AppData\Local\Temp"  ExoStruxureITGateway 1.4.0 "Schneider Electric" 5432 8005 433 psql.exe keytool.exe 32761 prodCloud 0 0 false 4.3.2 1_4_0 dcos.dmp 1.0.0

The application will exit now

Who can help?

Thank you

Patrick

Dear Patrick Hesters,

Many thanks for the detailed logs πŸ˜€.

As a result of the analysis, it turned out that the gateway software can not be installed because of this error:

initdb: could not execute command ""C:/Program Files/EcoStruxureITGateway/1.4.0/pgsql/bin/postgres.exe" --boot -x1 -F ": No error
initdb: removing data directory "C:/ProgramData/EcoStruxureITGateway/1.4.0/data"
""initdb.exe failed.""

In turn, the above error is not a problem for your server OS. This error occurs because of insufficient administrative privileges of the Phe user, on behalf of which you start the installation process of the gateway software.

Therefore, the installation of the gateway software must be performed on behalf of the user as a minimum with local Administrator rights or this user must be a member of the Administrators Group.

If your user Phe is only a member of the Power Users Group (for installing regular programs), then this will not be enough, because during the installation of the gateway software, system services are created and started.

Please verify the privileges of your Windows OS user Phe.

With respect.

P.S.: do not forget to return everything back for the four Dell Systems Management services πŸ˜€.

Dear Patrick Hesters,

Please, see the solution from the similar topic  for this error:

From your comment:

In the task manager, I ended the task on Postgre SQL before but I still have the same message

What is this another PostgreSQL process? Does it use any other software on your PC? To check and normal installation of the gateway software on the PC there should be no other PostgreSQL services.

Try and report the result.

With respect.

Dear Patrick Hesters,

Unfortunately, the information provided by you is useless.

In order to get a complete list of services running on your Windows server, execute the following command from cmd with the administrator rights:

sc query > run_services.txt

Then, analyze the run_services.txt text file for the running PostgreSQL services.

Try and report the result.

With respect.

Dear Patrick Hesters,

It seems to me, that not everything is as simple and trivial...

Carefully study your runnning_services.txt file:

SERVICE_NAME: dcevt64
DISPLAY_NAME: DSM SA Event Manager
TYPE : 10 WIN32_OWN_PROCESS
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, ACCEPTS_PRESHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0
SERVICE_NAME: dcstor64
DISPLAY_NAME: DSM SA Data Manager
TYPE : 10 WIN32_OWN_PROCESS
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, ACCEPTS_PRESHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0
SERVICE_NAME: omsad
DISPLAY_NAME: DSM SA Shared Services
TYPE : 10 WIN32_OWN_PROCESS
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0
SERVICE_NAME: Server Administrator
DISPLAY_NAME: DSM SA Connection Service
TYPE : 10 WIN32_OWN_PROCESS
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0

All the above services are running on your server belongs to software Systems Management Event Manager from Dell Inc.

Therefore, I recommend that you temporarily stop all the above listed services and then try again to install the EcoStruxure IT Gateway software:

net stop "Server Administrator"
net stop omsad
net stop dcevt64
net stop dcstor64

I hope that this will help you. Try and report the result please.

With respect.

I have stopped all the mentionned services.

dcstor64_not_stopped.txt

The last one, "DCSTOR64" was not possible to stop.

Afterwards, I tried to install Ecostruxure Gateway, but it stills fails, with the same error message.

Ok, then switch all four of the above services to manual startup and reboot your server (if possible). It is very important to try installing EcoStruxure IT Gateway software without running DSM software services.

Try and report the result please.

With respect.

Hello Spezialist,

I was able to do the requested actions this morning.

I have rebooted the server, and I have checked (and stopped, switched to stop and disable, if they were running) the processes.

I got the same error during the install.

I rebooted the server and I checked DSM SA services : they were all stopped.

Then I did again an install of EcostruxureITGateway-1.4.0-windows.68.exe  (run as admin) : still the same error  ! β˜ΉοΈ  β˜ΉοΈ  β˜ΉοΈ

Dear Patrick Hesters,

Ok, then show us the screenshot above the above error, please.

And additionally, if it is possible, you must also have a log-file of the unsuccessful installation of the gateway software, which should be on path C:\Program Files\EcoStruxureITGateway\1.4.0\install.log.

With respect.

Ok, try again install EcoStruxure IT Gateway software.

When the window with the above error appears, do not click the Ok button. Go to the above paths and copy the above logs (four log-files) to the safe place. Then you can press the Ok button so that the installer rolls everything back.

Try it, please.

Dear Patrick Hesters,

The bitrock_installer.log file you found is exactly what you need, that is, it is the log file of your unsuccessful gateway software installation. Unfortunately, after analyzing this log file, I still can not say what is the reason for the unsuccessful installation?

Therefore, I highly recommend uninstalling the gateway software after its unsuccessful installation (if applicable) and reboot server. Then go to the web-page https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/310099/description-of-the-portqry-exe-command-line-utility and download either Portqry.exe or PortQueryUI tool for MS Windows.

Then, using the above utility, make sure that on your server three below the specified network ports no other software is listening:

If it's okay, you should see something like this: TCP port is NOT LISTENING.
The three above network ports are necessary for the normal installation and operation of the gateway software:
dbPort = 5432
shutdownPort = 8005
httpsPort = 443

Be sure to check this and let us know the result.

With respect.

P.S.: I today tried a clean installation above the specified gateway software on a virtual machine VMware with OS MS Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit): the installation was completely successful. I.e., I could not repeat your error...

Hi Spezialist,

Thanks for your suggestion.

I will do this actions tomorrow (when I am in front of the server).

But : You ask me to "uninstall" EcoStruxureGateway. In fact, it was never installed. The only actions it did was "unpacking", and it started the forst actions of the install, or am I wrong?

How can I "uninstall" something that is not correctly installed?

I did only a "delete" of directory "Ecostruxure" and all the files in it.

Should I do more/other things? Please instruct me.

I would like to do a clean install of W2K8R2 also, but I do not have the install media . .  (licences I have)

If you are an employee of SE, can you share the install media with me by "box"?

Many thanks,

Patrick

Dear Patrick Hesters,

I did only a "delete" of directory "Ecostruxure" and all the files in it.

Should I do more/other things? Please instruct me.

That's right you did.

I would like to do a clean install of W2K8R2 also, but I do not have the install media . .  (licences I have)

Be sure that with a clean installation of the OS, the gateway software will also be installed without problems πŸ˜€. That is, this is the problem of your server OS.

If you are an employee of SE, can you share the install media with me by "box"?

No, I'm not an SE employee and I do not have the install media you need.

I think you still need to find out why you have the above error on your server. Therefore, I will wait for news from you.

With respect.

Hi Spezialist,

Here the results of the actions :

I did again an install and toke a printscreen of the directory temp for the requested log files (when the error popup is visible)

Afterwards, I deleted the EcostruxureGateway directory completly, and I rebooted the server.

Then I ran PortQuery :

For me, it looks ok. For you?

KR,

Patrick

Dear Patrick Hesters,

Thanks for the info.

Yes, you are right, everything looks just perfect, but it does not work ☹️.

Give me some more time to analyze.

Dear Patrick Hesters,

Try this method of finding a problem under MS Windows.

  • Go to the Action Center and click link View reliability history:

  • Then select Days there and analyze whether there were any problems with any programs or systems (for example, I did not have any problems):

  • After that, you can click on the link View all problem reports and get here:

  • If there were problems or errors, you can double-click on it and get into the detailed error description screen, like mine:

Try this and report the result, please.

With respect.

Dear Patrick Hesters,

The above errors are very old and have nothing to do with your problem.

Try second method of finding a problem under MS Windows.

  • Go to the Administrative Tools and select Event Viewer:

  • Then select Windows Logs -> Application there and click  on the link Filter Current Log...:

  • In the Filter Current Log window, only set the following events, that is, Critical and Error (Verbose):

  • Click Ok and analyze the recent application errors found:

  • Do the same steps for Windows Logs -> Setup as I have on the screenshot:

  • And the same steps for Windows Logs -> System as I have on the screenshot:

What errors and critical events can you find here?

Remember, we are only interested in recent events during recent days.

With respect.

After i sended y the information above, i tried again an installation of EcoStruxureGateway (on 16u46).

I got agian the error, and i clicked OK.

Then i went again to the windows evnet loggings, and i passed them all 1 by 1 to verify is an entry was written at time +/- 16u46;

NO LUCK. in none of ALL the "chapters" (also in the wondows branche). . .

So for me the error during the installation is not "seen" as a "windows event" to be logged.

Patrick

Dear Patrick Hesters,

Ok, then let's try the last way πŸ˜€ to find out the cause of your problem.

To do this, you must again install the gateway software. After the installation fails, go to the C:\Program Files\EcoStruxureITGateway\1.4.0\scripts\ directory and open the install.bat file using the MS Notepad. In the beginning of this batch file, change the line:

@echo off

to line:

@echo on

Save and close this batch file. Then run cmd as administrator and execute this command:

"C:\Program Files\EcoStruxureITGateway\1.4.0\scripts\install.bat" "C:\Program Files\EcoStruxureITGateway\1.4.0" "C:\ProgramData" "C:\Users\Phe\AppData\Local\Temp" EcoStruxureITGateway 1.4.0 "Schneider Electric" 5432 8005 443 psql.exe keytool.exe 32761 prodCloud 0 0 false 3.4.2 1_4_0 dcos.dmp 1.0.0

What result will you get?

Try this, please report the result.

With respect.

Hello,

I ran the command you proposed.

When I analyse the result, I do not find anything related to "sql".

Dear spezialist,

I am sorry to inform you that this is not (yet) the solution.

I can say for sure that when I started installation of EcoStruxureGateway, I did this with the instruction "RunAsAdministrator". So I am a little bit surprized, that I than not have the admin rights. . .

I checked user PHE, and indeed, he did not belong to the admin group.

I added him afterwarts, but still the same (error) result.

I got the admin account, and I tried to install it under Admin. But still the same error.

Here the error logs :

Dear Patrick Hesters,

Congratulations, you are on the right path πŸ˜€. You must continue to run the gateway software installation process on behalf of the Administrator user.

I analyzed the log-files and can confirm, that the above mentioned init error of the PostgreSQL DB has been successfully solved. This means, that the database service has been successfully registered and started in the OS. Check it like this from cmd:

sc query EcoStruxureITGateway-db-1.4.0

and optionally:

sc query EcoStruxureITGateway-1.4.0

Now you have another error, more simple:

C:\>SET /p DBPW= 0<"C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\db.pw"
The system cannot find the file specified.
initdb: could not open file "C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\db.pw" for reading: No such file or directory

Do you understand what's the matter? Try again, if possible, to uninstall and delete all the gateway software directories after its unsuccessful installation. Clear the temporary directories C:\Windows\Temp and C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp. Again, try a fresh installation of the gateway software on behalf of the Administrator user.

I hope you succeed in everything.

With respect.

ISSUE SOLVED ! ! !

I deleted c:\program files\EcostructuxureITGateway

and

I cleared c:\windows\temp (I did not his before), and c:\users\Administrator\AppData\local\Temp.

I rebooted the server and then I did an install, and everthing went fine , no error anymore !

It is strange that when I was logged in as "phe" and I started the installation as "RunAsAdministrator" that I did not got enough install rights.  where is it mentioned in the documentation that EcoStruxureITGateway should be installed only as Administration?

Thanks for your help.

Patrick

Dear Patrick Hesters,

Congratulations, you could do it πŸ˜€.

It is strange that when I was logged in as "phe" and I started the installation as "RunAsAdministrator" that I did not got enough install rights.  where is it mentioned in the documentation that EcoStruxureITGateway should be installed only as Administration?

In the documentation of the gateway software everything is correctly written. Simply if the user is not a member of the Administrators group, then when you call the Run as Administrator... context menu, you need to enter the username and password of the Administrator user or the user, that is member of the Administrators group. This is an important point for your understanding.

With respect.

P.S.: by the way, you will soon need to abandon the use of MS Windows 2008 Server, because for this OS is nearing EOL πŸ˜€. I recommend doing this now and migrating to MS Windows 2016 Server.
