Device lunch setting in DCE is not working on some devices.

We are running DCE 7.2.7.25. I am in the process up upgrade over 100 store level APC Smart 1500, 2200 and 3000 UPSs. I am configuring these device and adding the device launch setting to DCE. This process worked in the past but now the browser lunches to the login screen. When I add the same password as in the device launch setting, it works. I am finding this problem to be true on the new APC AP9631 NMC running version 6.5 and on older version 6.4 NMCs. Going back over devices I configured over the last several months, I am finding device launch setup works about 50% of the time. I can't find any common denominator as to why some fail.

Any help with this unusual action would be most appreciated.

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

First, you're working on quite an old version of DCE. we're at 7.6 now. I'm also going to assume that other than the failure to login, everything else works OK, you can actually manually log in and the NMC is then accessible.

I don't have the exact version numbers for both DCE and NMC firmware at hand however at one time, DCE would send less secure information in the link to launch / log in to the APC devices. Due to security concerns, both the link DCE sends and the device firmware were updated to be more secure encrypted link. If you have a newer NMC firmware with an older DCE (as you appear to have) or a newer DCE with older NMC firmware, the links will be incompatible. You should be at the latest for both NMC and DCE in order for the device launch to work.

Thanks,

Steve

Yes--everything works when I login to the device from a browser.

I am in the process of upgrading DCE to 7.6 and will wait to see if the compatibility issue goes away. Thank you for the knowledge around the security issue to the launch link. This makes sense since most of the new APC devices now have newer NMCs.

Thanks again,

Chuck

I have the exact same issue, monitoring multiple Smart UPS x750 configured the same. One will not launch using quick launch yet others do, all using the same firmware versions as below.

DCE v7.6

UPS Smart-UPS X 750

UPS 09.8 (ID20)

Application Module
Name sumx Version v6.6.4
APC OS (AOS)
Name aos Version v6.6.4
APC Boot Monitor
Name bootmon Version v1.0.8

Hi Richard,

The issue may be similar but unless the launch used to work and an upgrade to the devices caused it to stop working or if they had different firmwares, I don't think it's the same issue. I would suggest creating a separate post but since we're already here, I'll try not mixing the 2 issues up.

UPS or bootmon versions should not matter.

If they're all running the same firmware on the card, that in and of itself should not be part of the issue.

You state some work and others do not. What is different? Are they on a different network segment?

Are these devices on the public or private LAN of DCE? A mix of the 2?

If on the private LAN of DCE, how is the private LAN configured? Are both A and B in use? Is DHCP enabled? Where are these devices in respect to these configurations?

Do you have any proxies configured?

Does the DCE fail to launch to the web page or just fail to log in?

Can you get a copy of the config.ini from both a working and non working device?

What is the server configuration in respect to http and https (what is enabled, what port, etc) and what is the corresponding device configuration?

Steve
