Yes it does - during development the server is often tested on virtual machines. Make sure that the virtual machine follows the same machine specifications as suggested for dedicated servers.

Yes it will. I believe since 7.3 they have strongly encouraged users to move to a virtual environment.  Also they have added clustering and fail-over options to the configurations. 

We are running a lot smoother on a VM.  Make sure you follow their guide posted (in the 7.2 documentation I believe) for adding VMtools.  It is not straight forward and I have added comments and links to the bottom of the page as well.
