Hi,
I'd like to receive immediate notification via DCE in case of threshold violation allowing the StruxureWare Data Center Expert server to immediately poll an APC SNMP device in response to a trap, rather than waiting to poll the device during the normal scanning interval.... I've "flagged" "Register for Priority Scanning" in DCE and activated TRAPS on NMC: could you help me to double check if I'm right in these configuration settings or I'm missing something ?
Thx&Brgds,
Massimo

Hi Massimo,
It sounds like you are on the right track. However I cannot tell where you have set the "priority scanning flag"?.
1) It must be set on the APC Lan of the DCE server. Some information can be found Private (LAN2) DHCP Discovery tab
In the documentation you will see that the flag must be set before the device is discovered in DCE. If the device is already in DCE you would have to discover it again after setting the flag.
Then make sure to have the right "Write community" name set on both DCE and device.
2) It must also be set on the device itself. More information can be found Device Scan Settings option 8052735a

That first link would seem to indicate you need a second NIC and enable it for trap reception, is that correct? The second link only talk about APC devices sending traps, are other non APC device traps applicable?

Hi Chad, You are right. You would need a second NIC to function as APC Lan which is a separate management LAN that is used for e.g. management device Currently there is not support for other traps than traps coming from APC devices. This has also been discussed earlier in this thread: http://dcimsupport.apc.com/questions/93915440

Hi Massimo,
As long as you're dealing with an APC device and NMC firmware above 2.7.4 I believe it is, Setting priority scanning will set a hidden trap receiver within the NMC and that card should then send a trap to DCE which in turn polls the device immediately. It is not required that the device is on the private LAN. You do not have to enable SNMP or traps specifically. This works on both NIC cards as long as ports are open and the threshold you're referring to is on the device and NOT a threshold set on DCE. Any thresholds set specifically in DCE must wait for a poll. Please note that this does not refer to thresholds set by using the APC mass configuration option.
The only way to be sure it is configured properly is to test. If the NMC you're using has a temperature probe or dry contacts, set a threshold that is already broken. If it's 75 degrees, set a high threshold on the card for 65 degrees. If it is not a critical system, maybe a smaller UPS, pull the plug to force it to battery.
