DCE Backups

I have a client that is looking into the possibilities of installing a backup agent on their DCE server in compliance with the backup policies. The client is running DCE 7.2.7.

Is this possible and will it not affect the performance of DCE. Should it not be possible currently are there plan to accomodate this going forward.

Hi Kevin,

No, DCE 7.x will never allow customer access to the back end. It is a closed system. Future revisions of DCE however are planned as software only. Basically it will be an application loaded on a Windows/Linux system. Once that is the case, the customer can back their system up as they see fit.

Hi Kevin,

You can not install any applications or executables on the DCE server or VM. It has backup capabilities so that you can back up the config  or the config with the database (full). With a VM, you can also create a "snapshot" of the VM which is the entire system simply copied within VMware.

Thank you Steven. Are there any plans to have this functionality included in future releases?

Hi,

I also want ot ask some questions about DCE backups. I have StruxureWare DCE Standard server v. 7.0.0. I always make configuration backups using DCE client app. Backups are save to my NFS server. Let's say the DCE server hardware is broken and I only have configuration backups in my NFS. How can I reinstall the DCE server on the new hardware?

Best regards,

Raimondas

Hi Raimondas,

This should probably be it's own thread as it is somewhat off-point. To add the backup to another server however, you first need to restore that server to the same version as the old one. In this case, 7.0.0 as you stated. You can then import the backup from the old server. All of the configuration and (if a full backup was done) all the data should now be on the new server.

The only thing now is the license keys. You will need to contact your local tech support so they can reset the license keys and you can associate them with the new server.

I am sorry, next time I will create my own thread. Thanks for your answer. I understand the principle of restoring the backup to the new hardware, and I am aware of reseting license keys according to the new hardware MAC address/-es. But I do not understand how I should restore the same version DCE to the new hardware. I mean, should I have an installation CD or USB from APC? I cannot find any. besides, I did not install the mentioned DCE server, APC guys did it for me for the first time. Best regards, Raimondas

Hi Hi Raimondas,

You will need to contact your local tech support. They can provide you with the link to the appropriate version(s) for restore and potentially for subsequent upgrades assuming your support is all set. We can't provide the links in this forum.

The links to the download also have info on how to create a USB installer key or, since the download is an ISO file, you can always burn it to a DVD is you have a USB DVD drive. Simply set that USB key or DVD drive as the boot device in the bios and reboot the server. The system will be restored to that version.
