Can a person get a notification via email or sms from DCE once a backup has completed or failed.

Hi Craig,
There is an enhancement request in the system to send an email to the Central admins when the backup fails. I can add you to the enhancement request. It is stated for a future fix, although I do not know when/if this will be looked at. Engineering will take a look at all the enhancement requests and make a decision on what is going to the added to the new DCE releases.
On the dashboard under the Event Log Tab, filter the Category section to System. You are able to see if a backup has been successful or failed under these events.

How do we get an alert if the backup has failed?

As far as i know, if you are an administrator level account, you would automatically receive notification if the back fails, however, successfull backup alerts are not forwarded.
