Have a DCE 7.3.1 system with Netbotz 570 in a small server room with 5 racks. The fire suppression system is water and can't be changed or modified. They want to use smoke detectors attached to the netbotz and to have alerts created that shut everything down in the event smoke is detected. Is this even possible? Can anyone point me in the direction of how this might be accomplished? Thanks.

Hi Eric,
The NetBotz 570 can switch it's output relays based on any alert the NetBotz appliance sees. If you have a NetBotz smoke detector connected you can have that trigger an alarm which switches the output. This can be used to turn off just about any hardware or electrical output. If you have a system that already detects and has an output relay itself, you can connect a dry contact cable to the 570 and it can sense the system going into alert. It can then trigger it's output. This would seem redundant however as if the system already has an output, you don't need another on in the middle.
If you are monitoring the system with DCE, there is no option to script any output to any relays or to the NetBotz appliance. The DCE server can only output e-mails, traps, and messages of that sort. If you're monitoring DCE with some type of trap receiver, there are systems of that sort that can run a script based on a trap it has received.

Thanks Steve. So if I put in a NetBotz smoke detector can that directly signal PDU's and the Symmetra UPS to shutdown? All the PDU's are either AP8941 or AP8953NA3. Also, are there any detailed manuals/guides on this? I have the Netbotz manual but I don't see it going into details about this area.

Hi Eric, The output relay can trigger anything with an input dry contact type sensor. It could be used for instance on the Symmetra LX. The manual here: http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/ASTE-6Z8LS7/ASTE-6Z8LS7_R0_EN.pdf?sdirect=true This can be dry contact or 24V applied. I would be very careful in creating a specific alert action and profile specifically for the smoke sensor so nothing else triggers this. Please note that you will have to work with the default state of the relays. For instance if you manually change the state of a normally closed connection to normally open and reboot the appliance, it will change state momentarily (see k-base FA158337). I do not believe the PDU has this type of option but if they are connected to a UPS, shutting off the output of the UPS will also shut off the output from the PDU. Different PDUs may have different options. Steve
